We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Artimio Blackburn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Artimio below.
Artimio, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
When I was first starting out, I was ambitious but didn’t understand that gaining followers and likes on social media was not always equivalent with success in the real world. I had no idea of the business side of things that is equally essential to being an artist. If I could go back and start again I would learn the ins and outs making this craft into a business that can thrive and become fruitful enough to make more dreams into realities.
I’m grateful that now that is happening for me but for so long I had no idea of the route to go.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the creative industry through a brother of mine, a fellow Atlanta photographer. I originally wanted to get into acting/ modeling so he would get me on camera from time to time. I later realized I had creativity of my own that I wanted to explore. Eventually that turned into a passion and dream that I wanted to manifest as my career. I began shooting passion projects and got good enough to start charging. What has carried me has been a lot networking, word of mouth, and my portfolio.
I now shoot photography and videography and am in the beginning stages of building a production company.
For my clients, I bring their ideas to life and make it possible for them to marke themselves/ their companies/ & (or) their products.
I think what sets me apart from others is my creativity and artistic angle.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A goal of mine throughout this journey is to bring opportunities to my community and friends. In this space of being a creator or creative, there can be thoughts of opposition to others around you when it comes to other opportunities. I want to break that mold and bring up my community as I progress.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
There have been many times where I was taken advantage of by artists or companies because I didn’t understand pricing or charging my worth for different things. I think one of the hardest things to figure out within this industry is pricing. Finding people with similar work to me and seeing what they were charging/ asking mentors and friends for advice has helped me tremendously.
