We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Arthur Young. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Arthur below.
Arthur, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
I would have only started with one company vs two. We started with Uncle Yogi’s, which focused on skincare and wellness, then we added Kadii for pain management. That was a lot of capital right out of the gate. Partnering with a great marketing firm with a proven track record in the CBD industry would have also saved almost $100,000 in marketing dollars. We wasted well over a year with two different marketing companies that over promised and grossly under performed. Every meeting was full of false promises that never came in to fruition. Being in the CBD space, it is extremely important to use a marketing company that is familiar with the industry because even though CBD is federally legal, the rules and places you can actually market product is very limited.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was a professional golf caddie for nearly two decades and I would witness the trials and tribulations of not only physical ailments that plagued the golf industry, but also the anxiety athletes would experience at the beginning and during a round. The first tee jitters are a real thing! My wife actually got me interested in the industry from a pain management standpoint because she had a horrific car accident in 2002 and has struggled to find natural ways to manage her pain. Through researching the CBD industry, we also saw a need for natural skincare products without harsh chemicals that could truly aid in the healing and anti-aging process. We started with Uncle Yogi’s and yes…I even got my certification in making all natural skincare products. If you would have told me that I would have a certificate in skincare formulation 5, 10, 15 years ago…I would have told you that you were crazy! I DID learn a lot about how our skin absorbs so many good (and bad) things that we expose ourselves to each & every day. With Uncle Yogi’s, we created a full skincare line as well as a few products to assist in pain management and anxiety. For Kadii, we decided to focus on pain management, sleep, anxiety and performance enhancing products. We have some great topicals as well as a few indigestible products that people religiously order to help with sleep, anxiety, focus and more! We researched different ingredients and different companies to partner with on the manufacturing side for the better part of five years! We didn’t want just another “run of the mill” product. We wanted something better with thoughtful ingredients that can truly help aid in the healing process. My wife and I are extremely proud of the brands we have created and we truly have put blood, sweat and tears in to developing the line we currently have…and we look forward to adding some great products in the future!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During our journey, we have been kicked down a LOT! Our first processor we paid a substantial amount of money to and the products that they sent back with our formulations were disgusting. The company claimed they could make skincare products, but they didn’t have the knowledge or wherewithal to make a great product. We had to get an attorney involved to get our money back which wasted time. Fast forward to our NEXT processor. The process was rocky and a bit cumbersome because we had to outsource the packaging & labels separately, but the product was excellent so we fumbled around and wasted a LOT of money with that as well. We did finally have a finished product we loved…kind of. The labels aren’t the material we wanted, but we’re revamping for round two. The paper doesn’t hold up well, but it’s “natural” and fits the business model. Developing Kadii was exponentially easier! We partnered with another manufacturer that is a one stop shop. That made our life a LOT easier! Once we had both of the products in production, we partnered with a marketing team. We paid them over $50K over the course of a year and they only did about 1/3 of what they promised. It was extremely discouraging and we didn’t have any sales to show from our investment (besides friend and family). We found another marketing company and paid them over $20K and we found ourselves in the exact same spot as we were with the PREVIOUS marketing company. BIG investment with zero return. We have been kicked and knocked down, but we refuse to give up because we believe in our products. When I get discouraged, my wife reminds me of the people our products are currently helping and that it just takes ONE big break to turn everything around. We’re forging ahead with another marketing company and so far so good. As Jimmy V says, “Don’t give up….don’t ever give up!”
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My co-founder/business partner is my wife. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today without her. We matched in 2017 on Tinder AND Bumble. Full disclosure…she never reached out to me on Bumble, but I DID finally reach out to her on Tinder. She lived in Charlottesville. I lived about an hour away in Richmond. The first time we met in 3D, I drove to Charlottesville and met her at her mother’s restaurant. She was finishing up a business meeting and asked if I wanted something to drink. I said “yes” thinking she would bring me a beer or Corona or something stiff to break the ice…but nope! She brought be me an iced tea with lemon (and it was unsweet)! A Southerner that doesn’t drink sweet tea!? I’ll never forget it. I fell in love with her that day and the rest is history!
