We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Arthur Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Arthur, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project so far would be the ” Heart of Salvation” piece that I created earlier this year. I adopted the idea when I entered a phase of life that was unfamiliar and learning myself all over. It was a lot of adversity and I called on God to hold me together in those times. I am forever grateful for the way he orchestrates situations and people in my life even when I do not understand the process. So this idea lingers in my head for six months before I even begin the sketching process, I finally approach the project with a fresh mindset. I live by salvation in life because it creates a peace that the world cannot offer and that is all poured into the piece. The colors of salvation are six colors that represent individual parts of my spirituality. Red is the blood of Jesus, blue is baptism, green is growth, white is purity, black is sin, and yellow is heaven. The bandanas represents my environment in my childhood which is gang culture, and how my community always has to balance both worlds. An individual might not be in a gang, but you still feel the effects and God has a dominant role in the community as well. I love expressing everything that makes me the man I am today and these two influences are a part of my thought process.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I go by Art which is short for Arthur. Ironically, I create a variety of art forms like graphic design, digital art, custom paintings, and apparel. The brand is called Soul Outkast and I started this business around 2018, but I have created art since the age of six. It has taken me a long way so far and I have barely scratched the surface. I continue to remain consistent with my craft. Every piece I create, you can see the development with my skillset. When it comes to creating commissions for clients, I always aim to satisfy their ideas as if it is my first opportunity. I bring them an authentic and refreshing art style because I love to articulate those ideas and bring them into fruition. My focus is quality over quantity to help start brands or be an asset to their vision. If there are any problems, I stay in contact with clients to minimize these problems and always update them throughout the process. The main thing I want the people to know is that Soul Outkast will always represent hope in adversity and inspire people to become who they are meant to be in this life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission is to inspire people like myself to never hide their talents. As well as be an aid in school programs that include creativity in every format. Then, bring a new look to being an artist spiritually,
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The freedom to create your mind’s raw thoughts and bring them into fruition and I can rest mentally to become a better creative.
