We were lucky to catch up with Arthur Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Arthur, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When it comes to playing drums, I always had a natural ear. I was able to pick up rhythmic patterns and mimic them from a very young age. Over the years, I fostered my talent by studying jazz, gospel music, drum lines, and anything else I could get my hands on in high school. Upon entering college, I studied orchestral percussion and graduated with a BA in music performance from Missouri Southern State University. I also studied at the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles. Sometimes, when I think back, I wish I could have sped up my process and skipped steps to get to my final destination, but I know that’s just out of impatience. The truth is, I needed every lesson and mistake to get to this current place. One of the most essential skills was learning to become a melodic player as a drummer. Once I learned to hear the correct notes/pitches, my drum tones began to match the music as the records intended. This really expanded my range and made me a more complete musician. I don’t feel like any obstacles stand in my way when it comes to learning more. I’m constantly evolving and elevating my craft with each new opportunity and experience.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My first opportunity in the music industry came through the Musicians Institute. That was nearly 10 years ago, and since then, I’ve used all that knowledge and more to get to where I am currently. Now, I am a producer, session musician, and music director, as well as a live arrangements and playback engineer. I provide all the artist I work with these talents to enhance their art either through a record or live performance. One thing about me is that I’m very meticulous. Any projects I take on are highly detailed and are completed with the client’s full vision attached. That same detail is applied when in a live performance aspect as well.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative person is that I can control my own life. I’ve never subscribed to the natural order of a 9-to-5 job. Also, I never could be on board with having a boss, lol. I love that I can control my own destiny through hard work, dedication, and consistency. I get out of my career exactly what I put in, so I have no ceiling.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main goal as a creative is to touch as many people as I can with my art. Music really speaks to the soul, and it’s very fulfilling to be able to provide relief, escape, or even therapy from the normal wear and tear life brings people. Also, obviously, who doesn’t want to be a rockstar? Lol.
