Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Artesanias Claudia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Artesanias, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
We’ve always had a spark to create something and have it grow into a way that helps our family. We inspire each other and find new ways to move forward together from the things that life throws our way. Our mission started with the love we have for Mexico, its people, its story and culture, and all the colors it gives. We try to show that through the pieces and items we bring from Mexico, the hard work, the stories it tells, and through vibrant colors. This small business helps our family as Artesanías Claudia, but it also helps support our extended family and other small businesses in Mexico that help bring even the smallest work of art here to the states.
Artesanias, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Artesanías Claudia is a team of a mom (Claudia) and her two daughters (Abril and Nichole) offering a selection of handmade Mexican items including clothing, ceramics, decor, handbags, and 100% Soy Wax candles in Mexican ceramic pieces. Each item is handwoven, handcrafted, or handpainted by artisans in Mexico. We connect with small businesses in Mexico and curate a collection of items to bring over to Texas where we are based. All of our soy wax candles are blended with local TX ingredients and essential oils. All three of us have a part in the making of the soy wax candles, but our mom Claudia is the main candle maker as she is always creating new fragrance blends that are inspired by Mexican florals, treats, places, or perfumes. We have all have a part in this small business and it has brought us closer as a family as we are working towards our goals together.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
Our most frequently asked question is if we have a store or website! Hopefully, one day in the future we will have a place/store of our own. Currently, we are super appreciative and grateful for Heritage Collective DFW to host our Mexican ceramic candles on their shelves in their store located in Bishop Arts Dallas.
We are working on our website! It will be available on artesaniasclaudia.com. We will have our signature collection of tazita candles on our site, as well as jewelry, seasonal items and ceramics, and a variety of embroidered clothing.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
We’re a family first. This past year, we have learned so much about how to work together as a team in this growing small business. Communication is super important. As much as we would like to make so many candles and attend many markets/pop-ups, we are still a small team that balances school, full-time jobs, and everyday life. We have each stretched ourselves too much and reached limits that at leave us burnt out or stressed. We have to remind ourselves why we started Artesanías Claudia in the first place, how we can continue our mission and stay true to ourselves, and highlight our strengths as individuals. We each have an important role and it’s important to highlight how vital we are to keep this small business going together.
