We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Art Realm Tattoo And Gallery. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Art Realm Tattoo below.
Art Realm Tattoo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
At our studio, all of us tattooists try to make every project a meaningful one, of course for our clients who trust us to mark their bodies, but also for us as artists, in order to be motivated and inspired by the work we’re doing. It always comes out better that way–when client and tattooer feel equally invested in the outcome.
Often clients wish to express a meaningful concept, idea, event, or memory through their tattoo, and as long as they’re open to our process and our ideas or recommendations, based on all the knowledge and experience we’ve gained as artists over the years, we’re able to also find meaning in the work, as it expresses our unique interpretation of that idea and showcases the skills we’ve worked hard to achieve.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
At Art Realm, we’ve all come to the craft of tattooing through a love for art and creative expression. We all work in other mediums whenever we can, like oil or acrylic painting. Making art is something we’d all still like to do whether we’d be getting paid for it or not. Having this inner drive to create makes this more than just a job, and that passion for what we do comes across to our clients and shows in our quality of work.
Our studio is set up like a private studio, where we generally work by appointment only, scheduling only 1 or 2 clients per day, and giving each person’s project the time and attention it deserves to be a unique piece of body art in the end.
Sometimes this way of doing things can look like exclusivity or seem overly difficult for the type of client who calls the studio and wants to be seen right away, but the unfortunate side effect of slowing down to devote your full attention and care to each client who goes through a one on one consultation and appointment booking process, is that you won’t be able to service all types of requests. We strive for quality, not quantity, and the beauty that comes from persistence and dedication over instant gratification.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When the pandemic first hit in early 2020, it became a very chaotic time for our industry, and none of us knew what the future of our close contact, in-person, service oriented profession would be. We had several artists from our team and a former co-owner part ways due in part to the uncertainty and stress of those times, and as a result us remaining 2 owners made the decision to scale down and do something more oriented towards our private studio, custom tattooing mentality. We moved locations to a smaller but way better space, simplified our business setup with fewer people involved, and got much more streamlined and efficient as a result. This process has been helpful in navigating the past few uncertain years as our industry slowly recovers.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
What many non-creatives don’t understand about our journeys is the 24/7/365 effort it takes to do this at a high level, and as such, the toll it can take on your mental and physical health. The actual hours spent tattooing, which can be physically taxing, are for many of us only the tip of the iceberg. When not tattooing, we have to spend time drawing and trying to get into the creative headspace to produce these designs for our clients, manage our bookings and client relations, do inventory and keep ourselves fully stocked with supplies, do accounting and stay up on things like licensing, taxes, and insurance, not to mention promotion like this article and of course, maintaining a presence on social media. It’s an all encompassing lifestyle for many of us, and if we’re not careful it can also be overwhelming. Often clients who don’t get a quick response, or who don’t get something from us that they were expecting, don’t understand how obsessive and taxing this type of profession can be.
