We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Art Paul Schlosser. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Art Paul below.
Alright, Art Paul thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was a kid I use to sing stuff off the radio and my sisters always told me I couldn’t sing but one time they said if your going to sing the song at least finish the lyrics. Well they said I couldn’t sing but then I found a record of the rolling Stones and I figured I could sing like that. Then they said The Rolling stones don’t sing good and I figured well maybe you didn’t have to sing the greatest but just had to have some people like you. When I got older I was in a summer work program where they paid us to learn how to act and in the program they gave us writing note books. we use to fake our accents and act like we were the Beatles when we were just hanging out when we weren’t to the acting. One friend said maybe you should write some lyrics so then I started writing lyrics. At first they weren’t very good but then I started studying famous poets and then my Mom bought me a guitar so I started writing songs but nothing would have happened if I didn’t lose my job . Because I was mostly a song writer that didn’t tell anyone about it. But when I was out of work I discovered you could play music on State street and then this local band Cattle Prod ask me to open for them but I should play originals and after the gig people started asking me to play the originals on State street and then people ask me for cassette tapes …
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, if you never heard of me my name is Art Paul Schlosser and I write funny, serious and gospel songs to help people think and smile and sometimes open up. My songs are not written in perfect perfection but are more like art pieces and ideas to make you question reality. I’m not trying to sell out by just writing pop love songs but have covered all sorts of topics from having a Peanut Butter Sandwich to Kiss me darling I’ve got Aids from Vote for me/It’s a Joke to Jesus took away my drugs. My artwork is also something I do to make you smile or think . I have painted animals flowers, The Alphabet, Jesus, Monsters, Whales and abstract expressions paintings in both Jackson Pollock style( but when I drip sometimes I try to make it look like something) and I invented my own Abstract Expression style. I also have books I’ve written and my newest book is called: Who I Am and some good advise.. What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s a great way to communicate with certain people that can’t relate to direct communication. Also I like the fact that I can come and go when ever I please. Being a street musician I don’t have to be there everyday. Of coarse if I get sick it’s on me but still the freedom of coming and going when ever I like is nice. Another things about art, music and poetry is no one can really say your doing it wrong because of poetic license. Poetic License says any style is correct. If you have an audience and they support you don’t worry about people criticizing your work but do listen to constructive criticism. So what i am saying is I like the freedom to come and go when ever I like and I like the freedom to communicate the way I can in the forms I have chosen and that I have found an audience for it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One of the best ways to support artist and to encourage more and more artist is to pay them what they are worth. I’m not talking about rich famous celebrities that are over charging but rather if some local artist is asking $50 or $100 for a painting and you really like it don’t go up to him/her and said will you take $20. Streaming is good but if you got a CD player and you see them live and you really listen to CDs or records and you think you really will listen to it then fork out the $10 or $15 or get a t-shirt from your favorite local band instead of supporting Nike or Addidus. Your voting with your money. Sometimes instead of paying $40 or $200 to see a world famous band that is making tons of money who you hear their song on the radio all the time, go see a local band for $5 or $10. You might hear something new you never heard before and might make a new friend.
