We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Art Eddy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Art , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects that I have worked on over at the Art of Fatherhood was when I teamed up with BetterHelp. I created articles and conducted a podcast on how dads need to take care of their mental health. A few dads that I know are struggling with their mental health. Unfortunately, a few of them took their own lives. So I reached out to BetterHelp to see if we could work together to normalize dads making sure they take time to heal.
From that project, I received some texts and emails thanking me for what I was doing on my platform. One of my goals at the Art of Fatherhood to tell all sides of fatherhood. I love talking about the fun and happy moments, but I know not everything is sunshine and rainbows. I try to be positive on my site and podcast. I feel that the more work that I do like the example I mentioned will help get conversations going on how dads can show their kids the importance of taking care of themselves. I hope that is a trait all dads can pass on to their kids.
One of the main messages I get from the dads on my podcast is that they want to leave this world in a better place for their kids. The more we communicate with our kids on all the things that we dads struggle with, the better it will be for them to know that everyone will experience highs and lows in their lives. We need to use the support system around us for support. So that is one of the most meaningful projects that I worked on recently.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I run a site and podcast called The Art of Fatherhood. The Art of Fatherhood looks to promote and nurture the journey of fatherhood. The Art of Fatherhood podcast and website started up in 2019. I get the chance to speak with fantastic dads from all around the world as they share their thoughts on all things fatherhood. Therefore, you get a unique perspective on parenting from guests like Bob Odenkirk, Jayson Tatum, Antawn Jamison, Hank Azaria, Joe Montana, Kevin Smith, Danny Trejo, Jerry Rice, Jeff Foxworthy, John Stamos, Patrick Warburton, Jeff Kinney, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Kyle Busch, Vincent D’Onofrio, Dwight Freeney and many more.
The website shares stories on things dads and parents can relate to when it comes to raising families. From funny articles to important topics, I look to encourage dads and families everywhere and create a community that builds each other up with positive parenting.
I have a background in radio and journalism. I worked in different markets in the United States. From New Hampshire to New Jersey to New York I have been on air and worked in promotion departments at different stations in my career. When my second child came into this world, I became the stay at home dad. I saw the huge divide on how moms and dads are treated when it comes to parenting. That was the catalyst for me to get into this parenting field. I wanted to show that dads are just as capable of raising kids as moms.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As I mentioned earlier, dads are sometimes seen as second-class parents. So when I first started out, there were companies that didn’t feel like people wanted to hear from dads. Yet, I remained determined to share stories from all differents dads out there. I shared some of my stories as well. As I started to build a following and an audience more people started to listen.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would say one of the most rewarding aspects in terms of being creative in this parenting space are the many connections I have made over the years. Whether it is with the people I interviewed or collaborated with, I have created so many meaningful connections. They have helped me want to keep going in this forum. In addition the emails from people who have listened to my podcast or read my articles have encouraged me to branch out and tackle other topics in this parenting space.
