We recently connected with Arminta McKinney and have shared our conversation below.
Arminta, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
I am not only a photographer, but I’m photographer who’s a single mom who believes in the capability of blended families. I know that all single mom’s and dad’s may not be able to afford the cost of hiring a professional photographer to take photos of their families, so I like to have specials to serve them. All families deserve to have the experience of having their memories captured and I love to be able to assist them with that. I also hold a special place in my heart for blended families as I was raised in one and now am raising my son in one. Yes, I do believe in the traditional family (both mom and dad in the same home), but I believe in making the best out of the situation I’m in and I love spreading love and light about how a blended family can work through photographing them and through my podcast, AM Blended Families.
Arminta, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a single mother to my son, Miles and I have a heart to serve. I was born into an amazing blended family and I am proud of the one that I am now raising my son in. My village is absolutely amazing!
My love for photography begin when I was just 12 years old. My father was always the one with a camera on family vacations and I soon became the one who always wanted to take photos. I started my company Arminta McKinney Photography, in 2012 and I’m so grateful for those who’ve given me the honor or capturing some of their most precious memories.
When my ex-husband and I decided to divorce, it was our number one priority to make sure that our son always felt our love and that his life never felt the effects of our decision. Through this experience, I discovered how “different” we were in how we are raising him together, and I wanted to challenge other families out there to be “different” like we are (if possible. Everyones situations are not all a like). This is how I birthed AM Blended Families. I wanted our family yo be an inspiration to others and to help anyone that we possibly could.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There isn’t a particular resource that I wish I knew of, but I wish I knew the importance of having a mentor starting out. Speaking with and learning from my peers and those who’ve been in the industry ahead of mean, has been invaluable in my growth and learning process on this journey and that’s one thing I wish I knew the importance of from the very beginning.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One of the missions that drives my creative journey is capturing the story of blended families and single parents and telling their stories through my lens. I also strive to inspire other blended families like myself and sharing my personal journey and lessons to help others.
