Arlyana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Over the course of your career, have you seen or experienced your field completely flip-flop or change course on something?
Part of the reason I got into the mental health field was because there was such a huge pivot, a U-turn, and numerous adjustments in the mental health field. Pivoting in the field of maternal mental health amidst the challenges of the pandemic has been a transformative journey, marked by innovative approaches to address the limitations in accessing traditional mental health services. In response to the unprecedented disruptions, professionals and organizations within the maternal mental health sphere have recognized the urgent need for alternative methods of support, particularly in aiding mothers dealing with trauma and navigating the complexities of parenthood.
With traditional avenues of support becoming less accessible, the concept of pivoting became essential. This is why exploring unconventional approaches, and embracing creativity to meet the evolving needs of mothers because increasingly important to me in my field. This is where the Moms in Power workshops was birthed; these workshops a non-traditional therapy model, offering a dynamic space for healing and empowerment. By harnessing the therapeutic potential of creative expression, such workshops provide mothers with tools to cope with trauma, navigate the challenges of parenting, and cultivate resilience in the face of adversity.
Moms in Power workshops offer a unique platform for mothers to process their experiences, express emotions, and connect with others who share similar struggles. Through journaling, meaningful conversation, and creative modalities, participants are encouraged to explore their inner wounds, confront challenges, and create pathways toward healing and growth. These workshops foster a sense of community and solidarity, empowering mothers to reclaim power over their mental health journeys.

Arlyana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Arlyana Shanice and I am the CEO of the company Moms in Power. I am a licensed Social Worker in the State of Massachusetts and my background is in Psychology. As a Mother who struggled with postpartum depression after the birth of my daughter, I found one of my biggest struggles was I no longer knew or understood who I was as a person. I created what I believed to be a solid foundation, I had a fantastic village and support system that allowed me an opportunity to nurture the mother I was becoming however I greatly neglected deeper parts of myself. My focus had solely shifted to everything it took to become a caring, active, present and loving mother however I neglected to be all of that for myself. This contributed to so many tests and trials in my postpartum journey and recovery. I went through an identity crisis, completely overwhelmed with unbecoming, unlearning, and losing so much of myself, I no longer recognized who I was . Over time, I was able to develop a plan for restoration. I fought through the grief of who I once was, insecurities, fear, and doubt, and took steps to create a new version of myself; and an improved version of myself.
Women have to undergo labor, before birthing new life. Moms in power was created in the same way. I carried something within me but before I could push it out, I had to labor through the highs and lows of my own journey. I had to endure periods of pain and hardship, and still, I found the strength to endure, and then I was able to be born into someone new.
I want this to be an opportunity to bring new life to other women who may have shared similar experiences to my own.
Moms in Power was created to be a transformative business dedicated to empowering women on their unique journey in motherhood. Through the use of healing affirmations, strategic goal-setting, and specialized tools, we focus on building self-confidence, fostering self-development, and renewing faith within mothers. Our mission is to create a supportive community that enables women to navigate the challenges of motherhood with strength and resilience, ultimately helping them unlock their full potential. Moms in Power is committed to being a catalyst for positive change, fostering personal growth, and celebrating the incredible strength that comes with embracing the journey of motherhood.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing a clientele, as cliche as it may sound, is being your authentic self. Building clientele in the mental health field requires authenticity, empathy, and a genuine connection with your audience. In this field clients seek more than just a service provider; they seek a compassionate ally on their journey toward healing and transformation. Therefore, the key to building a clientele base lies in embodying your authentic self and fostering a safe, non-judgmental space for women and mothers to explore their mental health needs.
By sharing your own experiences and vulnerabilities, you demonstrate a sense of relatability, making it easier for clients to open up and connect with you. Authenticity is the groundwork for trust, and trust is the foundation upon which lasting client relationships are built.
Moreover, creating a safe space is essential for clients to feel comfortable and supported in their healing journey. As a mental health professional, it’s crucial to cultivate an environment free from judgment, where clients can express themselves openly and without fear of criticism. This safe space fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance, allowing clients to engage more deeply in the therapeutic process.
Beyond simply providing a service, it’s important to convey the true intention behind your business: healing, connection, and restoration with transformation are the core values of Moms in Power. I find that women who are drawn to businesses that align with their values and resonate with their needs. By clearly communicating your mission and values, you attract clients who are seeking exactly what you have to offer – a journey toward holistic well-being and personal growth.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn within my business idealizing perfection before I started. I think its so easy to fall into the idea that one has to be perfect in order to just begin, but truth of that matter is we all have to start somewhere. When I created the foundation of Moms in Power, I had the idea that it would look and run a certain way. The truth is, everyone has to start somewhere. Waiting for perfection before launching meant delaying my business and missing out on valuable opportunities to learn and grow. I had to embrace the idea that it’s okay to start imperfectly because there will always be room for improvement.
Launching my business taught me that mistakes are not failures but rather growth opportunities. Each misstep provided valuable lessons that helped me refine my offerings and better serve my clients. I learned to view mistakes as a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey rather than something to be feared or avoided.
Moreover, I discovered the power of adaptation. Just because I launched with a certain idea or strategy didn’t mean I was locked into it forever. This was in fact, my business which means, I had the freedom to re-do, pivot, and innovate as needed to meet the evolving needs of my business and my clients.
Ultimately, I learned that perfectionism is not only unrealistic but it’s counterproductive. By letting go of the need to be perfect, I was able to embrace the journey of entrepreneurship with more confidence, resilience, and creativity. I discovered that imperfection is not a hindrance but rather a catalyst for innovation and growth.
