We were lucky to catch up with Arleta Mykolyk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Arleta, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Prior to graduating from University, I worked as a Slimwave technician helping women regain confidence and strength. After graduation however I turned that chapter and moved to the corporate world, as many naturally do. Every fiber of me being knew this wasn’t my calling but quite honestly I didn’t know exactly what was just yet.
Over the course of time, I had numerous previous Slimwave clients reach out to me. That made the idea of going out on my own as a Slimwave Technician surface. This decision would mean that I would leave behind a corporate career and stability for uncertainty. It maybe didn’t make sense on paper but it’s a risk I have never regretted.
Taking this risk allowed to grow my small business and clientele beyond my 9 to 5. It allowed me to meet and treat hundreds of incredible women. This decision led me to the opening and running of a business that centered around Electro Muscle Stimulation technology for over 5 years. It also lead to my true passion: teaching. I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach and mold Slimwave clinics and professionals across Canada for over 10 years and this is leading to my next big risk, moving and relocating my family to the US to develop the Slimwave market. I’m very excited for this next step and view it more as an opportunity backed with great experience rather than a risk!

Arleta, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I worked for a salon that introduced me to Slimwave while still studying. I immediately fell in love with the product and service because of the results it gave clients and myself.
For those not familiar with Slimwave, it it a body sculpting treatment through EMS (electro muscle stimulation) technology. Not only is this treatment immensely effective and affordable it is also therapeutic to clients with Slimwave injuries, aches and pains.. I have had the chance to work with hundreds of women and seen great transformations, confidence building and recovery all due to this treatment non invasive treatment.
My biggest pride is being able to teach and certify technicians and clinics because it allows for more women across different areas to take advantage of the many benefits that come from Slimwave.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
I recently sold a business that I built with my husband centered around EMS technology. We started, owned and operated the business for a little more than 5 years.
It was a difficult decision but one we feel completely aligned with. When we first opened, this start up, new concept to the market, was our baby, like many small business owners identify their businesses. I am honestly proud of everything we’ve accomplished through that business , we went from a startup that no one knew about to having a full staff, great clients , tv appearances, magazines features and profitably. Like many other businesses, Covid hit and made us reevaluate or goals and priorities and we took the decision to sell and move on to a new business venture.
The most challenging part was the actual decision, because like many small business owners , this was my baby and it wasn’t started in the goal to sell and move on; but once I changed my perspective and looked at it as an asset where I created value , I began to let go. I now can look back and be proud of what was while ready and excited to take on a new challenge.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Marketing is key and cannot be omitted at any level. To effectively market yourself and/or your product, you must first truly understand what problem you are solving and for whom. Once you are clear on that you formulate your message, get it out and the most important part : you must deliver on your promise. Marketing will get people through your doors but it is what you do as a business that will keep them there.
