Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Arlene Olivos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Arlene, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Well, one thing I’m grateful for from my parents is that they always taught me discipline and to love school. That’s what I truly value, because I’m always learning, and because I never give up.I feel that the fact that they pressured me from a young age created perseverance in me, which has made me never stop looking for opportunities even though the doors have closed; I have never given up.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My work has been based on exploring the field of art: painting, drawing, theater and audiovisual such as photography and short films. I have also been in various workshops to continue learning and improving.
In 2019 I participated in the talent contest “Muévete” in the category of plastic arts, organized by the French Alliance of Piura, Peru. In 2021 I managed to participate in the National Artistic Exhibition called “ELLAS: 200 HISTORIAS”, for the Bicentennial of Peru. I also participated in the II International Exhibition of women artists “Portraying my Pet” made by the Association of Plastic Artists of Puno, Peru. In September 2021 I contributed artistically in the 4th Exhibition “Free Will” organized by Universo de las Artes, Argentina. In the month of December I was in the international virtual exhibition “New Directions in contemporary art, Ucayali 2021” made by the School of Fine Arts of Ucayali. The same month I participated in the End of the Year International Virtual Exhibition organized by Universo de las Arte, Argentina. In the year 2022 in the month of March I was in the international virtual exhibition “Woman in Freedom” made by the Superior School of Public Artistic Formation Eduardo Meza Saravia, Ucayali, Peru. That same month I was in the international virtual exhibition “#8M” organized by Universos de las Artes, Argentina. In October I was in the event THE ARTS ATL where I exhibited my paintings.
The last short films I have made have been based on poems I had written several years ago, and in 2020 my animated short film “Liberation” was part of the official selection of the Festival de Cine con Chifles de Piura, Peru. In 2021 my short film “Ministerio de la verdad” was chosen to be exhibited in the CDVplay platform of the Censurados Film Festival, Peru. In September of the same year my short film “Una historia más” was part of the 10 short films of the category Muestra Fuera de Competencia CDV14 and was exhibited by the CDVPlay application of the International University Short Film Festival “Cortos de Vista”. In 2022 I participated in the Censored Film Festival contest, with my documentary “Otro amiguito del pueblo”.
As for photography, I obtained the second place in the PERU 8MIL photographic contest. In January 2022 my photograph “Zaña, forgotten capital” was part of the exhibition of Maravillarte, Peruvian art contest and exhibition at national level, under the title “PERU, A WORK OF ART” and I obtained the second place in the photographic contest PERU 8MIL. And in September 2022 I was exhibiting at the ArteExpo Dallas museum in Dallas, Texas. In 2023 I was in the exhibition of Maravillarte with my photograph “together a lifetime in omia”.
I very much want to continue to grow professionally and artistically. For one thing, I want to move and inspire, in other words, I want people to use their emotions more when they see my work. I want them to enjoy and think more, I would be very happy if I at least make a positive change, or inspire someone.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most gratifying thing is to be able to finish a project, and that it is as you had it in your thoughts. Although most will identify with the fact that artists always have high expectations, and that the project is as we have in our thoughts, so we become very perfectionist. And that feeling of seeing that the project really has managed to look the same is more than satisfying.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Well I think it’s something that all artists have, we need some time to process that moment of inspiration. Because in reality the inspiration to create comes unexpectedly, and all of a sudden you just have to run out and write the idea and execute it, and we have that struggle with procrastination, and do it later. So also something that is inevitable for creative people is procrastination.
