Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Arion Grzelka . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Arion thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
A question everyone asks; what do you want to be when you grow up? Easy, an artist. I knew from a very early age that I wanted to be an artist. But what did this really mean? I’ve always loved creating, doodling, drawing and painting. When I was in school I took every creative, arts class offered. Still unsure of how to make this into a career, I chose Graphic Design in Art School. Turns out I hate computers and found myself the happiest when I was making a mess, actually creating things. However after college, I found myself back behind a desk and computer, creating art. But I wasn’t happy. One day I attended a paint and sip class and found that spark again. Now as an adult, I went back to my roots and picked up a paint brush. I began teaching painting classes and found that creative outlet that I needed. Fast forward through a pandemic later, I found myself searching again. I opened an Etsy Shop and set off to see if I could make Art a real thing, making it on my own, as a full time artist, for myself. Finding the balance between life, being a mom, a creative, I believe I have finally found what I am truly meant to be doing. Being an Artist.
Arion, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Arion Grzelka, I am the Artist and Maker behind Ren and Brush., based in Pittsburgh, Pa. During the pandemic I found myself searching, like many people. Now what? I went back to my art roots and picked up a paint brush. I wondered if I could actually make art and sell it. So I took a big leap and decided to open an Etsy Shop. The first night of my launch, I actually sold something! This was a turning point in which I knew, I can do this. So from a little Etsy shop, I thought what’s next? Art markers. I’ve always loved attending art markets and festivals. Figuring out all the moving pieces, Ren and Brush was coming to life. Ren is my childhood nickname that has molded me. Painting was another piece to this puzzle. Once a brand was made, I began applying to markets and art shows. To my surprise, I was being accepted. Loading bins, tents and hauling paintings around has now become my new reality. Being my own boss and creating my own schedule has allowed me to be more present for my family. I am able to be a creative, wife and mother, without the stress of working a traditional 9-5.
I specialize in creating skylines of the city and florals. I create vibrant pieces with acrylic paints; using brushes, wood shims and cards to create texture and movement. Most of my work is completed on larger canvases. I then have an amazing photographer and local mom and pop printer that brings my art to a smaller form. I continue to sell my original paintings, prints, ornaments, magnets and other home decor at local markets. Sharing my gift of art with everyone is what I’m most proud of.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being and artist is finding the balance. I am now able to do what I truly love and at the same time, being present. Being present for myself and my family. Everyone is born with a gift. Mine is art and I am able to share it with the world. I enjoy hearing stories from my clients and buyers of what a piece means to them. This makes me happy.
