Alright, Arindam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?

I love taking vacations with my family. I have traveled to countries across six continents. Traveling to foreign countries offers a wide range of benefits that can enrich your life personally, socially, and professionally. It has allowed me to experience different cultures, traditions, and customs. It has broadened my perspective and helped me understand and appreciate the diversity of the world. Each country offers unique experiences, such as trying exotic cuisines, exploring historical landmarks, and engaging in adventure activities. These experiences create lasting memories and enrich your life with diverse adventures.

Taking a break is essential for your mental and physical well-being. Recognize that stepping away from the business for a short period can help you come back refreshed, recharged, and ready to tackle challenges with a new perspective. As a photographer, most of my clients have contacted me through my website, social media or email and this has allowed me to be in touch with my prospective clients even when I am outside the country.
For entrepreneurs who are hesitant about taking a longer vacation, I suggest starting with a short one first. This will give them an idea of how well your business functions without them and help build their confidence for longer vacations in the future.

Arindam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am a scientist and photographer, living in Olney, MD. I started my journey in my science career by looking through microscope lenses to study tiny cells. This was followed by extensive use of confocal microscopy in my research work. This allowed me to learn advanced imaging techniques to obtain high-resolution, three-dimensional images of biological specimens. My connection with lenses eventually evolved into my hobby of landscape, wild-life and macro photography. I have been fortunate to travel to six continents and capture unique and beautiful moments of life. Portrait photography is my latest passion. From Art to photography, portraits are fascinating because it tells us a story about the subject. I have been fortunate enough to have some of my portrait work published in artist magazines. Since I am excited and love all genres of photography, I continue to explore wild-life, bird, landscape and macro photography in addition to portrait photography. I was honored to get the first prize in the photography category for my hummingbird photo at the 2022 Labor Day Art show organized by Montgomery County Art Association.
My photography services include corporate and creative headshot, portrait, senior portraits, family portraits, pet photography, product photography and more. In addition, I cotinine exhibiting my work at various venues within the county and the state.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

Photography allowed me to express my creativity and artistic vision through capturing moments, scenes, and emotions in a unique way. The ability to turn regular subjects into beautiful and compelling images can be immensely gratifying. As a photographer, I often had the privilege of capturing significant moments in people’s lives. Although I have not done wedding photography (actually one for my nieces wedding when I did not know anything other than the auto mode in the camera), I have done family gatherings, pet photography and special event photography. Preserving these memories for others and knowing that the work will be cherished for years to come can be deeply fulfilling. As an avid traveler and photographer, I have been able to photograph new and exciting places, while exploring the world and capture its beauty. The thrill of discovering unique landscapes and cultures has been highly rewarding. Being able to submit my work at exhibitions and being recognized and appreciated by others, has definitely boosted my confidence and provided validation for my artistic endeavors. Exhibitions, awards, and positive feedback from clients and audiences can be incredibly rewarding. As a photographer, I always strive to improve my skills. A journey of a photographer is of continuous learning and self-improvement. Mastering technical aspects, understanding composition, and developing a unique style can be personally fulfilling. Overall, the most rewarding aspect of being a photographer has been the ability to combine creativity and my passion for storytelling. Photography provided me a creative escape from the routine of everyday life especially during the pandemic.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

Photography has been my passion for many years but I have not done it professionally till 2021. Having a regular job helped. I have been doing photography for many years and being interested in several genres, I had slowly built up my equipment base including cameras and lenses. After I became a professional, I self-funded my initial investment for buying studio equipment and for setting up my website. Taking photography courses with an understanding that all income I made with my freelance photography projects or part-time photography gigs will be set aside for future investment for my business. YouTube was an amazing resource too. My current focus is on delivering high-quality work, keep on improving my portfolio, and consistently promoting my services to attract clients and generate revenue. As your business grows, I plan to reinvest my profits to further develop your photography business.
