We were lucky to catch up with ARIELL ADAMS recently and have shared our conversation below.
ARIELL, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I took a chance on myself!
Even though I had a stable management job with a decent income for 15 years, it wasn’t fulfilling enough. I found myself having to request time off, work overtime, and be on call during holidays – all while sacrificing time with my family. The last three years of my job were particularly difficult, and I often had to decline business opportunities for my own company because my job took priority. I was working so much that my daughter began to feel neglected, and it didn’t sit well with me. Although I had written down a date to quit my job, I never stuck to it because I didn’t feel ready or financially prepared. So, I prayed to God to make me uncomfortable enough to force me to make a decision to take a chance on myself. Over the last three years, God did just that. Then, one day in February 2020, I walked into work and quit on the spot without any prior notice or plan of action. In fact, I quit even before the date I had written down. Over the past three years, my journey in business has been both challenging and fulfilling. While some days have been tough, I’ve learned to appreciate the unexpected blessings that come my way. Through networking, I’ve formed valuable connections and encountered numerous opportunities that were previously out of reach during my 9-5 job. Developing a wide range of skills has enabled me to offer diverse services to my clients, resulting in increased income. Taking a leap of faith and stepping out of my comfort zone has been an awe-inspiring experience, surpassing all expectations.
ARIELL, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I entered the fashion, beauty, and design industry because it has always been my passion. Even before starting my business, I enjoyed designing parties for my family simply because I loved it. It all began when a complete stranger saw one of my Instagram posts and registered my business name, which became a turning point. As time went on, I developed a love for makeup after a friend named Danita admired my skills and asked me to teach her. Initially hesitant, I eventually embraced it as more people were referred to me, and now I truly enjoy it.
Now, after almost four years in business, I offer a wide range of services, including event planning, makeup application, one-on-one makeup sessions, hair styling, fashion styling, and I have even become a licensed life insurance agent. I consider myself a creator in the realms of fashion, beauty, design, and wealth. I take pride in persevering even when facing financial challenges, trusting that if I continue to work hard, God will provide—and indeed, He did.
Little did I know that sitting in my chair, clients would find solace and comfort. Many times, I’ve witnessed tears and provided a safe space for my clients to vent. Given my diverse talents, I have become a one-stop shop for many. What I want potential clients to understand is that I genuinely love what I do, and money is merely an added bonus. My true passion lies in making others feel comfortable in their own skin, leaving my chair inspired and prepared to conquer any obstacle that comes their way.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During my role as the wedding planner and day-of coordinator, an unexpected challenge arose. When I went to make a payment for the wedding floral arrangements, I discovered that the floral shop had permanently closed down, as indicated by a sign on the door. Panic set in as it was my first major wedding, and I didn’t know how to fix the situation or break the news to the client.
Determined to find a solution, I immediately started making calls and reached out to a wholesale floral shop. To my surprise, one of the workers there happened to have her own floral business. I quickly contracted her services, despite incurring a financial loss. My primary focus was ensuring that the bride’s special day would proceed seamlessly, and to this day, she remains unaware of the behind-the-scenes challenge and its resolution.
In the end, I successfully resolved the issue without burdening the bride with unnecessary worries, allowing her to enjoy her wedding day to the fullest.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One significant lesson I had to unlearn on this journey is the belief that I could navigate it alone. I had become accustomed to shouldering all the challenges, causing unnecessary headaches and stress. This mindset persisted when I ventured into my own business. However, as I began connecting with fellow business owners, attending networking events, and engaging with like-minded entrepreneurs, a shift occurred.
Through these interactions, I gained valuable knowledge, received genuine advice, and found support that has been truly amazing. I realized that I don’t have to face everything alone and that seeking help and collaboration can lead to incredible outcomes. Embracing the power of connection and opening myself up to the wisdom and assistance of others has transformed my journey, making it more fulfilling and filled with growth opportunities.
