We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ariel Omarzu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ariel below.
Ariel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I was 27 years old before I picked up any type of instrument. I had three children, a failing marriage, and basically no time whatsoever to devote to myself. It wasn’t until my kids were given a throwaway piano that was literally pulled from the recycling center, that I got a break one day during nap time and started plunking around. I was instantly hooked. I don’t know what exactly the word is, but I was always trapped behind a facade for the world. As a mother I had to be strong and present and just as myself, as a wife I had to be put together and stable, and maybe a woman raised in the south by gay fathers, I felt I could never really let anyone in to see who I truly was. I’d hidden in those facades for so long that I lost my true self. But, when I sat down in front of the keys, all the words I could not say and feelings too deep for words would pour out of me.
Music has been my therapy. It’s truly helped me find myself again, refocusing on what is important in life and how I can generate the energy to manifest the changes I wish to see. I have become deeply invested in the retroactive legality of Cannabis in the United States. I am a full time marketing manager for one of the fastest growing hemp companies in the south and, just like music has helped transform me, I see every day how the plant can help people find comfort, and themselves.
I am 32 years old now, everyday I spend practicing in order to spread my message of love and acceptance of your true-self and of others. I have won envied events and awards, I have played in unbelievable places and in front of people I never even dreamed to have met, but it will never be something I can kick my feet back and relax with. There will always be more work, and I will inevitably fall back into moments of self loss, but I am so grateful to have music there to help pull me out.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am inspired by self-realization. I believe, like I mentioned earlier, that we all are always “putting on a show” and maybe even more so in this digital age of social media. Music is a language, and I use it just as that. One that speaks to you in a place more primordial than words. If I can find a way to use my music to connect somewhere deeper, behind that facade with people, they are hooked, even without knowing why. I make music that is rhythmic and passionate, but it’s difficult to describe it for many because of the fact that they are often unfamiliar with that part of themselves. It’s just that it makes them feel, and I only have that ability because it’s what it does for me. I am beyond blessed to have been given the gift to hack into this part of myself, my children are blessed to be able to join me in the journey, and I believe we are given gifts because we are supposed to share them.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Artists need to be everywhere. Again, we live in a facade world and we are trying to make ourselves into these creatures that can bend and transform to the will of the world around us. It is exhausting and unnatural. Artists help us, subconsciously , reconnect with the true versions of ourselves. It is worth every penny available to offer compensation for someone who can remind you of what you actually exist of.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s always to have that conversation with someone that doesn’t know they’re having with you. People speak with their bodies and movement far more openly than they do with their words. I see people that have so much stress on them, open up a little and share a whole intimate moment with me, without even knowing it. Music is like a spell, if it is paired perfectly with the environment you can change people’s whole demeanor. It’s rewarding to change that for the best, to help people heal, to watch them fall more in love, to see them let loose and remember that life is full of challenges, but one of the greatest is to not forget to have fun.
