We recently connected with Ariany Calles and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ariany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
When I arrived in this country I am an immigrant from Venezuela, I thought that my degrees would help me get a job since I am an Anthropologist with a master’s degree in art and an accessories designer. My surprise was that none of those titles allowed me to get a job in my area, so I had to start a business to live and I started making accessories and selling them at fairs. then I started organizing fairs and helping other people, I developed a method of consulting and wrote a book, I have a magazine and now a spa. thanks to those rejections
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I arrived in this country 9 years ago. With a lot of fears, very little of the language and many titles that I thought would help me get a job in my career. But that wasn’t the case. So I have to start a business. I am an anthropologist, with a master’s degree in museology, art knowledge and accessory design. Divorced and mother of two wonderful children who are my light. After going through divorce, ordering food in the churches today I own my business Hecho a Mano LLC where we advise women entrepreneurs to develop their business, a magazine with the same name and a spa Clínica Mi cuerpo.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think my whole story is resilient. An anecdote would be that when I started looking for a lawyer to get a divorce, I started raising money and trying to do things right. Many lawyers recommended that I not get a divorce because of an immigration issue. So I thought what I could do with the money I had saved. That money helped me open my store and publish the first edition of my magazine.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to understand that I couldn’t solve everything and unlearn myself multicapable. We cannot control everything, neither in life nor in business. No one loses alone we all need help to grow. let go and trust.
