Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ariann Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ariann, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge I have faced with trying to increase my profit in my business is the time of year. Not everyone is always looking to have a custom charcuterie board on just any given weeknight. Some people are also going to try and go out to make their own board rather than order a board from me. The cost of cheese also has increased in the last year which can make it difficult to stick to my set prices. I have noticed over the years that holidays, or special occasions are were my business thrives. From October to February there is holiday after holiday and people are always looking for an easy but delicious appetizer. That is where I come in, I’m happy to create a custom charcuterie board that will fit everyone needs and that will have a little holiday flare.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ariann Johnson I am a stay at home to two beautiful kids but I was looking to get my creative juices flowing again, so I decided to start my custom charcuterie board business. A little over two years ago I was at a family function when I brought a delicious homemade charcuterie board. It was filled with cheeses, meat, crackers, fruit, olives and some sweets. I got so many compliments and tons of people telling me I should do this a small business. I really never thought I could, but after really thinking it through I decided to take the leap and go for it. I was pleasantly surprised at how fast my business took off and how many orders I was doing. Now over the years I have learned that people have specific or dietary needs when it comes to their boards. I have learned to make all gluten free boards, vegan boards, and have even added a charcuterie cup to my menu. Each of my boards are jam packed with goodies and you also get to keep the board and cheese knife. While I am only able to make these board in my home state of Colorado I have received many customers from Highlands Ranch, to Boulder, and even Colorado Springs. I am happy that over two years ago I started this journey, I am still able to be home with my kids but I can also do something for me that brings me even more joy!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective way of growing my clientele has all been word of mouth and previous customers recommending me. I live in smaller suburb town called Highlands Ranch where I have grown up almost my whole life. Its an amazing city to raise kids, walk your dog, meet friends, grow a business, and even retire. I know a lot of people in this town so my business has really thrived off of people just referring me to friends and or family. I also have a pretty good social media presence which I have received several clients through that as well.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of creating my own custom charcuterie boards is the ability to create a delicious but also beautiful cheese board that most people can’t do. I pride myself on making each of my boards different but its also important to add a little flare such a salami rose which has been one of my favorites. I love watching videos of other charcuterie businesses and what style and techniques they use on there boards and taking that information and making it it my own. My two kids have also become big fans of mine and as a mom I think its important that I show them you can love what you do but not have to sacrifice so much time with family.
