We recently connected with Ariana Serrano and have shared our conversation below.
Ariana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
My brand is named Ladybug Beauty. The name “ladybug” was actually given to me by my mother. She has 3 daughters and she will refer to all of us as her “ladybugs”. I decided to take that nickname and make it a part of my brand; not only for the sentimental factor but knowing that the name “ladybug” can be turned into a household name. I felt the name “ladybug” is also able to be used comfortably on several platforms in a time where stage names are not as “family-friendly”. I always wanted to name my brand something that can be inclusive and accepting by all.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Ariana Serrano and I am the CEO of ladybug beauty. Ladybug beauty started as a brand that I wanted to create to make sure I fulfilled my passion in the beauty industry. My passion and love for the beauty industry started very young and I was actually introduced by my mother who was very prominent in the beauty industry working for the likes of Christian Dior and the prominent Apothecary C.O Bigelow’s growing up. I was very intrigued in the beauty industry and not only the physical aspect; but how good someone felt after a beauty service. So I always had the feeling of wanting to make people feel good in that sense.
So I decided in college after having my son, I really wanted to pursue this passion 100%. In February of 2015 I was licensed in the State of New York for cosmetology and immediately wanted to find the best way to serve my clientele. I started with doing editorial magazines and working in local beauty shops. I also curated a live online media outlet on streaming radio where I was able to publicly advertise my services. Social media platforms also became really popular so I was able to showcase my techniques and personal style setting on the internet which greatly built clientele for the brand. After some time building my brand in New York, I felt the need to expand and the demand for my techniques expanded as well.
In the midst of getting my cosmetology license, I also worked as a home aid for teenagers with special needs. Once I was already licensed, I decided to integrate the two concepts and I started providing non-chemical services for children on this spectrum and those with special needs. My youngest sister is actually on this spectrum as well so I started using my techniques on her to learn the best forms of action, managing time and providing hair services for those with special need. I felt that even though there were those on the spectrum and with special needs, they still have the right to feel good with a beauty service. I feel that the parents or guardians of those on the spectrum and with special needs don’t consider the physical aspects and how many are still image-conscious in the midst of their day to day lives.I also took the initiative to research beauty tools which will also be beneficial to those on the spectrum. I spent several years researching technique, the best forms of communication and how to build trust with guardians and families within these beauty services.
I’m looking forward to the future and incorporating therapist and trained service providers to be in the salon during the services so it could be a team effort provided for clients. Also, I’m looking to provide beauty demonstrations and courses for the families and guardians of those on the spectrum to maintain these beauty services in between visits. I am currently license in the State of New York and Nevada for cosmetology. So in the next few years I’m looking to build an expand this brand to genuinely demonstrate how beauty makes a difference in our lives.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being in this industry is that you can genuinely see the satisfaction and positivity once you complete a service. I know so many clients that either had a stressful day or they’re just going through a tough time in their lives. Simply looking for someone to talk to and in the midst of providing this beauty service, they could really vent in this intimate setting and know that they’re looking good and feeling good but more important they get to genuinely release the stress and tension some may not be able to do. They’re trusting not only in hair, but money and time. To be the person who provides that for them is something that I consistently strive for within my brand.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
“Word-of-mouth” would always be the number one factor within my market. “Word-of-mouth” has bought my brand many connections, clintele and overall amazing opportunities. I’m always supportive of social media and marketing platforms, but when you have that 1 to 1 personal referral of someone that says “Hey, that girl “ladybug” does a great job!” or “she did my hair!!” brings the best out of myself and my brand.
