We were lucky to catch up with Arely Briseño recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Arely thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The name of my jewelry brand is Dose of Home jewelry. The name of my brand has evolved since it started, when I opened my business in the summer of 2020 without really knowing where it would go. We were in the middle of the pandemic and I started my jewelry business buying jewelry from my childhood friend from Mexico. To honor her work I used named my business after my friend, who was my first ever jewelry supplier, the initial name of my brand was DH Jewelry. However, as my business grew over time and I learned more about artisanal jewelry made throughout Mexico, I decided to rebrand my business in the summer of 2022. Since my brand was already recognized in my community I didn’t want to completely change the name, I just wanted to give it a meaningful name. After thinking about it for some time I came up with “Dose of Home jewelry” maintaining the initials (DH) that people were already familiar with, but adding a meaning to it. I chose Dose of Home because the jewelry is supposed to bring you a dose of Mexico, a dose of your roots, culture and tradition. My goal is that each piece of jewelry makes people feel like home, that it makes them reconnect with a a familiar feeling, the warmth of a place or a person they love.
Arely, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Arely Briseño, I’m a first generation Latina, Mexican- American, and entrepreneur. I grew up in the state of Jalisco, Mexico and I’m currently living in Los Angeles County. I’m the proud owner of Dose of Home Jewelry.
I started my jewelry business in the summer of 2020 when I was looking for something meaningful to do in the middle of the pandemic. I found myself brining handmade jewelry pieces from Mexico which allowed me to stay connected to my roots during those difficult times. It also allowed to have a second source of income and at the same time I was contributing to the economy of both the US and Mexico, which made me feel very proud.
My jewelry brand is different from other jewelry brands because all the jewelry comes from Mexico. All the jewelry is handcrafted by Mexican artisans and skilled jewelers from different Mexican states including, Chiapas, Nayarit, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Mexico City.
I’d like the audience to know that when you buy a piece of jewelry from Dose of Home, you’re not only helping my business grow, but you’re also helping other women entrepreneurs maintain a source of income on the other side of the border. Dose of Home jewelry is not just jewelry, it’s jewelry with meaning.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My jewelry brand was born on social media directly on my phone. The first thing I did was to open an Instagram (IG) account, started taking pictures of the jewelry and uploaded them to IG. I didn’t really know a lot about brand building, brand image or how to leverage IG for a business then, but I knew this was the way in which I could start reaching people and sell my products. My first audience were my friends and family, and little by little I started gaining followers organically.
As I mentioned before, I opened my business in the middle of the pandemic, when all the physical stores were closed, and people were craving for entertaining content and products that had a meaning. This helped me start making sales directly on Instagram. Followers saw my products on the page, and if they liked something then they messaged me directly to learn more about the jewelry piece they liked and buy the product.
By the end of 2023 I had gained more than 3K followers on IG, I had opened a TikTok account, and I also had an account on Pinterest. But unfortunatley that December my IG account was hacked, and I lost my account. I was devastated, I felt like I had lost my entire business, and I almost thought about giving up. But I didn’t, and I decided to open a new IG account(@dose_of_home_jewerly) and start all over, because I knew my brand was special and I had loyal clients that would find a way back to me.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned about social media for my business is to have secure methods like multi-factor authentication to prevent hacking. I also learned that it is important to have a presence in more than one platform so clients, followers and your audience can have access to your brand/products on different platforms.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The most important aspect that has helped build my reputation in the jewelry industry is that my pieces are authentic. My jewelry pieces are different because they are not produced in the hundredths, the jewelry comes from Mexican jewelers who make the pieces with intention. I’m also proud to say that I’ve built a great relationship with my jewelers that they even allow me to co-create the pieces with them, which means you know you will not find these pieces anywhere else because they are unique.
Another aspect that has helped build my reputation is the quality of the jewelry. Mexican gold plated and gold-filled jewelry is made differently, you can see it in the detail of the pieces. I’ve had a lot of returning clients who tell me that they like the high quality of my jewelry and that they appreciate the uniqueness of the pieces.
