We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Arabella Beaubrun. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Arabella below.
Arabella, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken was moving to Colorado with my kids 10 years ago. I’ve always loved New York, being a theater kid. I never thought I would leave. In 2013, I performed for AMTC summer shine. I did 10 showcases, where agents come to look for new talent. Two agents gave me a callback; one was for Miami and the other was for Colorado. I prayed about it and chose Colorado. I was asked to play Ruby in the play “Rain.” At that time, I worked as a key-holder manager in a clothing store part-time in New York and took care of my kids full-time. Moving to Colorado was not even on my mind. Somehow, God made it work, and I was able to travel back and forth for rehearsals on the weekends and still keep my part-time job. I remember looking out of my hotel room in Colorado at the mountains, saying to myself that I wished I could live there, and then I just forgot about it. But God had a plan. The retail store I worked for went out of business, and they gave me a severance package and told me to apply for unemployment. I knew that God was telling me to move. I remember having a talk with my now ex-husband that moving to Colorado would be best for our family.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have multiple talents: singing, acting, and jewelry making. Performing has always been a passion of mine since I was a child. I attended the Eubie Blake Theatre Company in New York, which was founded by Rosette Lenoire, who played the grandmother in “Family Matters”. In high school, I majored in performing arts and was part of a girl singing group. I also sang in the McDonald Gospel Choir, I sang for Shirley Caesar, Vickie Winans, and other gospel artists. Additionally, I sang in the choir at my hometown church, First Baptist Church in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York.
I started my jewelry business a year ago, but before that, I was always involved in creative fashion for myself. I believe I inherited it from my mom, who moved here from West Africa, Liberia, and pursued fashion and design. She used to make clothes for me and my brother for church and school. At first, I didn’t realize it was a talent, I would create pieces just for me and get compliments. I never thought I would turn it into a business.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Getting the audience reaction when I’m on stage is indescribable; it’s almost like a natural high. Actors feed off the audience’s energy, knowing that they’re enjoying the performance.
Seeing the joy on my clients’ faces when they wear my handmade pieces brings me great happiness.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It’s not easy to build an audience. You have to consistently post about your business, give your clients shout-outs, and Share your videos, showing your process from beginning to end.
