We were lucky to catch up with Aquerrah Cannon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aquerrah , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I would have to say I’m happy as BOTH! I don’t believe I have to chose. Creativity is the foundation on which my Artistry stands! I can’t have one without the other. I’ve had several regular jobs (as I’m only 22). However ever since I was able to “work”, I always felt like there was so much more to life than just being an employee. I don’t believe God blesses any of us with our many gifts and visions of grandeur to sit on them. Use it or you will lose it.
With that being said it doesn’t come without hard work and sleepless nights. It can be overwhelming at times. You begin to think “Am I in over my head?”/“Can I do this?!”. The answer is always YES . The joy I have for creating on my own terms is indescribable. All the tears, and time invested… it’s more than worth it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m what some some would call a Renaissance Woman. I’m an Artist. A successful business owner. I’m an overall creative. Had you asked me who I was a few years ago, the response wouldn’t be as eloquent. I just knew I had to create. I always needed and wanted to be heard. It just so happened to manifest itself in the form of ART. I would just get lost in the ability to be who I wanted to be, how I wanted to be!
The best way to do that was Makeup Artistry. I could create anything. The great thing about my field of expression is… there’s NO RULES. You’re free. I aim to make every one of my clients really feel that. I know that’s what sets me apart. The expression on my “Kuties” faces once they finally look in the mirror is one of pure joy and admiration.
I promise you will NEVER leave looking or feeling the same way you came.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I don’t come from a wealthy family. My upbringing was spent struggling. The whole paycheck-to-paycheck routine caused me to mature very quickly. I developed a hunger like no other. Coming from where I come from, there isn’t a plethora of resources to aid you; neither is everyone rooting for you. I want to be able to create generational wealth for those that come after me. When I’m long gone… May the work I’ve done speak for me!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started in 2018, I was a senior in High school. I didn’t know that content creating was even a thing. I just knew that I wanted to share what I was doing. I just had fun with it. People seemed to really love what I was doing. It didn’t’ start clicking until a few of my peers would ask “When are you doing another look?” Or say “ I saw your look last night!!” I literally was just doing it. The best advice I could give anyone just starting is consistency. Don’t worry about whether or not you’ll be received by everyone, you’re not for everyone. Be unique. Be yourself.
I’m still not where I want to be, but I’m proud of where I am, and where I’m going.
