We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful April Swierenga. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with April below.
April, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I absolutely love owning my own business! Sure it comes with its own set of challenges but to be able to set my own schedule and to allow myself time to take care of others as well as myself has been such an amazing journey!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is April Swierenga I am a wife of 26 years, mother to three amazing young men (and two amazing daughters-in-law), and now a grandmother. I love being a massage therapist. When I was younger I always loved the idea of being able to help someone else whether that be listening to them decompress and work through their problems, painting their nails to help them feel better about themselves, or rubbing their back (my kids loved this one). After I graduated from high school I had a dream to do a job that took care of others, I just wasn’t sure what that looked like. I needed to work different jobs to figure that out. I worked in children and adult group homes for seven years, worked as a church secretary for 15 years, as a bank teller, and as a massage therapist (on and off now for 15 years (since 2008). It’s been an exciting and exhausting challenge trying to figure out which path I really want to be on. But God leads me in the right direction and no matter how many twists and turns this road may take, I will continue on it for as long as I can.
In my massage business, I work hard to come alongside the needs of my clients and help them to the best of my ability. I want all my clients to feel comfortable, cared for, and listened to when they come for a massage.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Word of mouth… When others share their experience about their massage they gain the interest of others and then they pass on my information. When one person shares with three other people and they share with three other people it’s a trickle-down effect, now 13 people have heard about my business, right? That’s been the best way to build my reputation through others’ experiences with their own massage.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is my husband, Trapper. He helps me figure out everything I need to in order to keep my business up and running. He is there no matter what. He loves and encourages me to be the best I can be.
