We were lucky to catch up with April Liu recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, April thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?

One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was my very first collaboration with my roommate. We embarked on this project with an incredibly low budget, and it marked my roommate’s debut as a director. Despite facing numerous challenges such as budget constraints, technical difficulties, managing the crew, and scheduling issues, everyone involved poured their hearts into making it a success.

What made this project so special was the shared passion and determination of everyone involved. Despite the limitations, we were all driven by the desire to bring our best to the table. This experience taught me the true essence of filmmaking—collaborating with friends, overcoming obstacles together, and creating something meaningful despite the odds. It’s a reminder of the purity and joy that comes from pursuing our artistic dreams with those who share our vision and enthusiasm.

April, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am a picture editor born in China. I completed my undergraduate studies at Emerson College majoring in Media Arts Production, and has since found her passion in picture editing.

I believe what sets me apart from others as an editor are sensitivity to stories and a keen perception of pacing. While technical skills are essential, they pale in comparison to the ability to deeply understand and connect with the narrative.

To cultivate sensitivity to stories, I prioritize constant communication with directors during pre-production. I engage in detailed discussions about the story’s themes, character motivations, and the emotional arcs of each scene. By understanding not just what happens in a story, but why it happens and how it resonates with the audience, I can craft a more impactful and cohesive narrative in the editing process.

This approach not only ensures that the final product aligns with the director’s vision but also allows me to make informed editing decisions that enhance the storytelling experience. Ultimately, I believe that a strong narrative foundation is the cornerstone of exceptional editing, enabling me to create a seamless and compelling viewing experience for the audience.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

As an editor, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to transform words from the script and raw footage from the camera into a compelling narrative that resonates with audiences. The process of piecing together scenes, fine-tuning pacing, and manipulating emotions allows me to bring stories to life in a way that captivates and engages viewers.

Collaborating with directors, writers, and other creatives is another rewarding aspect. It’s incredibly fulfilling to work together towards a shared vision, leveraging each other’s strengths to enhance the storytelling and create a cohesive and impactful final product.

Ultimately, the satisfaction comes from knowing that my work as an editor contributes significantly to the overall emotional impact and success of a film or project, making it a deeply rewarding experience.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I believe several factors have contributed to building my reputation within the film industry. First and foremost is my dedication to delivering high-quality work consistently. I strive to exceed expectations with every project, paying attention to detail and ensuring that the final product meets the highest standards.

Another key factor is my collaborative approach. I value open communication, teamwork, and building positive relationships with the directors.
