Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to April Jett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
April, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I started my business in 2017 to become a life coach. I jumped out and I didn’t know what to do. But I felt that if I gave this my all, I could make money as a coach helping people. So I took some courses and got multiple coaching certifications. With money being tight, I had to teach myself everything. I built my website from scratch, on my own. I created my own course. I figured out how to become an LLC, how to get an operating license, how to pay biz taxes, how to create contracts and agreements, etc. I did this all on my own by figuring things out through trial and error. At first, it was exciting because I had a very unrealistic expectation of what I needed to do and how soon I could start getting clients.
When reality hit, I quickly grew defeated. I got to a place where I felt alone. I had done all of this work on my own and I still didn’t have a client. I had taken all the free advice the internet could give, and signed up for all the free workshops in the world to get help and I still was not making money.
So, this one particular woman that I was following, for almost a year had given such good nuggets of free wisdom, that when she said, “Join my course and you will make 10k In 30 days,” I believed her; she had testimonials and I knew that I could be one. Even though we were already in the red with the finances, I decided to get on the “discovery call” to “see” how much it cost.
At this point, I was desperate for help and direction. This program promised to help me do so many things from Facebook ads, to writing sales copy, to developing sales pitches, creating a signature system, how to handle rebuttals…it was going to do it all for me. I would get group calls, and even be assigned a coach to check in with me a few times throughout the program. It was PERFECT for the desperate state I was in. This was CLEARLY everything I needed to create 10k in 30 days during this 8 week program…and the testimonials of hers proved it.
On the discovery call, I found out the program was SEVERAL thousands of dollars…like $8000 or something. We were already in the red with finances but my husband encouraged me to try. So we gathered up all the credit cards we had and scraped up just enough money to be about $1200 short. The sales lady encouraged me to try PayPal Credit for the remaining balance and low and behold…with poor credit, I was still approved!!
Everything lined up perfectly for me to get in this program!! The timing, the support from my husband, and the fact that we had just enough credit to pay for it…. it was MEANT TO BE! I knew that this excited feeling in my gut was not a mistake and I took it all as signs that I needed to do it afraid, take the risk and prove to myself that I could make this money back and blow up my coaching biz.
So I enrolled in the program and I got busy. I would not be outworked and I did everything that was instructed of me throughout the program. I showed up while I was afraid. I asked questions that I thought were stupid. I worked 24 hours a day sometimes, no sleep, because I was obsessed with success. I HAD to make this money back! Even though we were in the red and used all of the credit available to us, it was only because we believed I would make it back. I had a lot on the line. Fast forward, 8 weeks came and left and I didn’t make any money. Not one damn dime.
It was a very horrible time for me. I felt like a failure and I was embarrassed because there were others who did claim to make money in the program, while I didn’t. It made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. I didn’t understand what went wrong. And now I have to face my husband and say, “we invested in me and now we are in debt EVEN DEEPER.”
It was TOUGH. I beat myself up for a while because now, our whole family was having to suffer the consequences. We couldn’t even borrow money from ourselves now.
I didn’t understand how everything had lined up so perfectly for me to enroll in this program, only for it to fall apart. It took a minute for me to pick myself up. It took my husband’s compassion and love and support to encourage me and remind me that there is no failure, there’s only lessons. And though I did not want to hear that, I had to accept it.
About two years later, I was still working in my business, doing better, but still feeling lost. Still feeling frustrated and overwhelmed with being a new mother, doing this business from scratch, and not having the resources to shorten my learning curve. But I felt called to this work, so I kept showing up even though I struggled with the thought of abandoning the biz in order to get a job. I wanted to bring in steady income because my husband was carrying the bulk of the financial load.
So one day, I became frustrated and I was throwing a temper tantrum, again, about how difficult this was for me. But then I began to encourage myself, saying that my break is coming. “I’m going to get a break.” And the same day, I had a message in my inbox on Instagram from the young woman who was assigned to me as my “check- in coach” two years prior in that 10k in 30 day program.
She was reaching out to offer to coach me personally! She had branched off into her own successful coaching business and remembered me. She said she saw me and felt called to reach out to help! She ended up coaching me for free every week for two years!
Over the course of that time, while I thought I was enrolling to get assistance for my business, I found out that I was getting assistance for my life. She helped me through so many ups and downs of my personal life and then showed me how my personal life was tied into my business. It’s just no way that I could have made the personal and professional progress that I made in that time frame without her assistance.
What I got from taking the risk was so many lessons about believing in yourself, and making mistakes and falling down but also having trust… having trust in a Higher Power, having trust in your intuition, having trust that you are guided and divinely led, having trust in that spark that’s inside of you, having trust in your gifts.
I learned that you WILL be given what you need, when you need it. Had I not taken the risk to believe in myself, to pull together the money to sign up for that program, I would have never met Meg. Had I not trusted in my Higher Power, intuition and in that excited feeling that was in me to sign up for this program and do the work, I would have never fallen that hard. And I would have never seen how my self-worth was directly tied to my performance in life. And I would not have had that opportunity to sever and dissolve those limiting beliefs about myself.
Had I never taken that risk, I would not have been in a position to have Meg come back two years later and have God, Source, The Universe prove to me that anything is possible…that I AM worth the time and the effort.
I was sent an entire person with an entire business to hold my hand and show me that I AM NOT alone. I was sent a whole person to have the hard talks with me to help me see myself, to help me have compassion for myself, to help me see that my dreams and my desires are worthy, to help me give myself permission to be imperfect and to show up messy, to help me see the world in a different light. I learned that there are people who are generous and loving and caring. And that there are people who are led by Spirit that follow their promptings and when they follow that call, they change lives. Because I am a recipient of the blessings from someone else following their calling, I’ve vowed to ALWAYS follow mine.
Taking that risk changed my life because it changed the way I saw myself. It changed the way I saw the world. It changed my relationship with Spirit. And it gave me a friend for life…today we are family.
I’ve learned that if we keep going, and we follow our calling and we trust our inner guidance, we will always get a break. If we never give up we will always break through.
April, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
About my myself and how I got into this industry…
It’s been a long road to get my business where it is today, as my business has been built in conjunction to my personal and spiritual growth.
Let me start here; I stepped out to do my own thing because I was a mental health counselor working as an independent contractor for counseling agencies without benefits. I had a bachelor’s degree but rose to the top position in the company as the Director—in 2 different companies, on 2 separate occasions. I was the person directly under the owner. Here I was running another person’s company, working harder for them than I had ever worked for myself. Stressing for them to attain their dreams and goals, while letting my visions for the future fall by the wayside. The irony was that I had a bachelor’s degree, BUT I was the boss of professionals who had master’s degrees and professional licenses. To me, it just wasn’t logical to go back to school. For what?
So, while on the maternity leave that my husband and I had to provide ourselves (because there were no benefits), I learned about life coaching and felt that was right up my alley. I could start my own practice as a coach and make my own rules, helping people the way I felt led to help them, without having to worry about fitting in someone else’s box.
I was set, so I thought. I had grown through some major issues with self-love, self-esteem and confidence, and I planned to base my business on helping people with those very things. But I found out that I had a whole other layer that needed healing before I could be seen or make money. As I faced my fears of failure, of being seen, of standing in my truth, of being judged, and much more, my business began to take a shape of its own. It’s now developed into a life mission and calling rather than just “I’m teaching you from my experience” type of business. That’s why I said that my business has grown along side my personal development.
In 2017, I had a spiritual awakening/dark knight of the soul. It shook all my religious beliefs. I went from being a pillar of support and beacon of light and faith for my friends, family, and co-workers, to now being shaken, unsure and scared. I got on my knees and surrendered my everything to God in prayer, asking to be personally led to The Truth. I was no longer able to believe what someone else told me to believe simply because it was “the right thing to do” or that I’d “go to hell”. I tell you, nothing was scarier than thinking that maybe you had it wrong after all this time that you thought you had it right.
Ever since then, I have been on that journey to The Truth. While on this journey I have developed a personal relationship with God, Source, the Creator, Spirit, that no one can shake, no one can touch. I KNOW that I KNOW that I am taken care of, provided for, guided, loved and supported. Throughout that time, my spiritual gifts of discernment began to strengthen, and I began to feel the prompting to approach random strangers and speak to them about issues in their lives. Though it was scary, I learned to lean into that fear and do it anyway, only to find that I was accurate about the situations and often had the person in tears about the timeliness of the messages.
That gift has continued to grow and build into downloads and teachings from my Higher Power. The majority of my teachings are from the messages I have received from Source in a time of need for myself or for others. However, over the years, my downloads have expanded to include information about the Universe, the Earth Matrix, how to be a more conscious parent, how to manifest and how to heal the wounds that prevent you from feeling the love, peace, prosperity, power and fulfillment that belong to you. The downloads I receive transcend religion and address humankind, as a whole. That is why I say my business has grown in conjunction with my spiritual growth.
About services I offer, the problems I solve and what sets me apart…
I consider myself a Soul Alignment Guide for Conscious Parents and Visionaries. I help people embark on radical self-intimacy journeys to learn the language of their soul to liberate into their most authentic selves in parenting, leadership and in life. I help people tap into their inner guidance to find the places in their soul that are ready for healing and teach how to facilitate that healing for themselves. I believe that we heal the world by first healing ourselves and it is through that healing that all the things that we have desired become ours.
What sets me apart…
I think what sets me apart is that I don’t consider myself a Guru or even an Expert, to be honest. I am a peer, a student of life and I am gifted with the yearning to teach, the bravery to be transparent about my own flaws and the audacity to share it all with others.
Problems I solve…
People come to me for guidance because they know that there is more to life than what they are experiencing and they are tired of feeling powerless over their situation. They are goal-oriented and driven, but need guidance on how to tap into their strength and inner peace.
Many are Visionaries, whom I help weed out limiting beliefs and create and find alignment with a personal belief system that is supportive of their visions and of the transformation that is required on their journeys. As a Visionary it is tough to hold the space for visions, dreams and goals that other people can’t see and often don’t understand. You almost have to be delusional to carry out the dreams and goals that reshape the way the world functions.
Many others I help are parents who feel that the old parenting paradigm is not resonating with them and they feel a calling to a different approach to building love, respect, trust and better relationships with their children. They speak the language of “breaking generational curses” and have an understanding that their past experiences and their relationships with their parents helped shape their beliefs and impact how they show up in life and particularly as a parent. And while, I don’t claim to have all the parenting tips and tools, I do have a tried and true system that teaches you how to find alignment with your inner guidance, values and how to create and connect to a belief system that empowers you and helps you to become more conscious and aligned as a person and by default become a more conscious and value-aligned parent. The answer isn’t usually a bunch of tips and tools, much more often, the answer is personal healing and growth.
How I serve…
I offer one on one and group online and in-person experiences as well as offer talks and presentations from colleges to non-profit agencies. My one on one Enlightenment Sessions are a little different from traditional “coaching.” First, my client and myself tap in together and allow Spirit to lead us in the session. Special attention is paid to intuition and we use it to guide us on what or how to approach the session.
My sessions include Wisdom Teachings from Source or revelation from my personal experiences. We reflect, process, and build on those lessons in practical ways to address your particular challenges. This is where you do exercises to learn about yourself and explore tools to utilize right now to facilitate healing. All my processes are intentional and are designed to teach you, through experiential learning, how to connect to and strengthen your intuition, how to find the places in you that need healing and how to facilitate that healing for yourself.
I do workshops and groups in order to cultivate community and support around trusting your intuition, taking back your power, aligning with your values and inner guidance to become a more conscious parent, and to build confidence for visionaries to trust their calling and intuition to pursue their dreams.
I am currently working on the final stages of The Behind the Mask Radical Self-Exploration Project which will be a self-paced course with built-in community that guides you through deep self-exploration behind the mask “they” told you to wear. The course will provide the tools, wisdom, support and guidance to teach you how to utilize your internal gps, challenge you to trust it and help you cultivate and lean into your own empowering belief system while helping you to create an arsenal of individualized and effective tools to support you in your transformation; whether the transformation is to become a better parent or to accomplish another big goal, removing the masks that bind you to your old identity and finding alignment with the most authentic, unapologetic, peaceful, powerful YOU, is ALWAYS going to be the answer.
What I’m most proud of…
While I am proud of the progress I have made in my business and the impact that I have had on others, I am MOST proud about my family. I’m proud of the peace that I have been able to cultivate in my life because I have learned how to surrender to the process, be patient with myself and find gratitude no matter what the situation. I’m so proud that I get to impact my husband and children in a life-changing and positive way, simply because I value my own peace. I get to model this to my family and I get to experience them modeling it back to me! Nothing matters more to me than family to me, so I’m beyond proud that I’ve found out that the best way to love my family with healthy love is to learn how to love myself with healthy love… and everyday, I’m getting better.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the expectations that I put on myself to have my journey look like everyone else’s journey. I expected to become a coach, get certified, set up my LLC, and the clients would roll in. After all, my whole entire life people had come to me for advice to help them with their problems. That is why I graduated college with a degree in counseling. That is why it came so easily and naturally to me when it came to serving clients at my job. To me, it was a no-brainer that I would have the same success as a coach. All of my family and friends actually thought that I was making a good choice by deciding to leave the counseling jobs to own my own business as a life coach. They all knew what I was capable of and how I’d helped them in life.
However, things don’t unfold that way. I saw other people’s social media posts, videos and following and felt that I needed to have it look like theirs before I could be considered a professional. So I worked hard on a website only to not get any visitors. I paid a few thousand dollars to have a program guarantee that if I followed their system I could make 10k in 30 days. That didn’t happen. I heard other people’s success stories and I tried to follow in their footsteps, literally, to have the same success. But that wasn’t working either. I went to seminars of people I admired, like Lisa Nichols, thinking that surely she had all the answers to how I could get where I wanted to go. But once at the seminars, I realized I simply couldn’t afford their programs. All of this left me defeated because I felt that others had my answer and I just needed the money to pay them for it. But because I didn’t have the money, I felt doomed.
Bottom line, I knew I was capable, I knew I was gifted, but I also thought that other people had the template to my success. I just had to find the right template and get the finances to pay for it and it would happen.
Fast forward to the lesson, I got to a point, with the help of my dear coach and now friend, where I had to accept that my journey is unique. All of our journeys are unique. I had to unlearn the expectation that my journey would unfold the way others unfolded. I had to unlearn that the answer to my happiness and success was somewhere outside of me. When things didn’t unfold the way I expected them to, it made me question myself and if I was on the “right” path because I was comparing my outcome to the expected outcome. And if my outcome did not match this cookie-cutter template that I was following, then I can’t be on the right path.
But what I found out was that “success” is a personal declaration AND it is directly related to your inner state. Especially when following your calling/intuition and trusting in a Higher Power to guide you, you can’t expect other people’s methods to work for you. I learned that this journey that I’m on, is made for ME. It’s made specifically for what MY soul needs to heal and to evolve. The healing that I need and the way that I will process the lesson is different from anyone else. I’ve learned to trust the process and know that if it’s happening, it’s happening for a reason and that reason is good for me…if I allow it to be…if I perceive it to be…if I can ask the question, what can I learn from this? You will take the wind out of your sails every time if you compare yourself to someone else. It’s not fair to you or to them. And frankly it’s murder because it’s killing your dreams.
Unlearning these expectations of how my journey is to unfold has been difficult. It’s a lesson that I’m still getting reminders from Spirit about. I just made a video the other day titled “You have your own template. Trust yourself”. It’s about this very concept I’ve processed with you here. It’s about understanding and believing that your journey is just as unique as you. And your template for success will look like no one else’s. It’s about how important it is to trust yourself on this journey so you can learn what you need to learn in order to grow and heal yourself to the next level. It’s when you come to truly accept this as a fact that you can lean into the process, trust it and ENJOY the journey.
In my unlearning journey, I have found that I am already successful because I’m living up to values and expectations that I have set from a place of health and love versus trauma and fear. I’ve learned to accept my imperfections and know that my journey, just like myself, is perfectly imperfect. I no longer underestimate the power of my gifts and I trust that everything that is happening is happening FOR me, not TO me or AGAINST me. It is the shifting to this belief system that has put me in a position of clarity and power. This shift is what has attracted clients and opportunities to me. I changed my inner world and my outer world had to follow suit.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I must say that resilience, confidence, intuition and belief in a Higher Power has been most important for succeeding in my career. I say resilience because when you are blazing your own path, you will get knocked down. If you are not resilient, if you don’t have that snapback, then you wont reach the finish line. I don’t believe it’s ever really smooth sailing towards your biggest goals. I feel that your biggest, most authentic goals are planted in you because taking action towards those goals and the journey that emerges from it, is meant to grow your soul. We can learn the most through our mistakes, others mistakes, tough circumstances and obstacles; however, if you are not able to see the blessing and the lesson, then you are leaving a lot of wisdom on the table. Being able to fall, learn a lesson, receive it as a blessing, integrate the wisdom into your life and then try again IS THE WAY. Resilience is vital to success.
I say confidence because if you don’t believe in yourself, your abilities, your gifts…then how can you expect others to believe in you to help them reach their most intimate goals?
I say intuition and belief in a Higher Power, because for me, following my calling is all about following my intuition, following my gut feeling, following the pulling towards something greater. I call intuition God speaking to you and through you. I believe that our intuition is connected to all the answers that we need for anything that comes up in our lives. Intuition, to me, is like your internal GPS. If you learn the language of your GPS and get better at knowing the voice of inspiration and wisdom from the voice of fear, then you will be easily guided in the direction that is best for you. You will be guided towards the people, circumstances and opportunities that support you towards your goals.
For me, belief in a Higher Power goes hand in hand with intuition as well as with confidence. My belief that I am a fractal of the Higher Power that IS ALL things, gives me the confidence to trust in my intuition, to trust that I am led and loved and supported. I get to trust that I have purpose and that the things that happen in life are meaningful and are designed for my evolution. I trust that I will get what I need when I need it and that my only true job is to learn how to surrender to the process, enjoy the journey and take action when I am inspired. I get to believe that my life is the purpose for my life and that everyday that I live it, I am fulfilling it. I get to believe that there is nothing else left for me to do, be, or become for me to be worthy of happiness, love, joy, peace and prosperity… I am worthy, just because I am. It is those qualities and that belief system that position me for success, in this career and in this life–Period.
