We caught up with the brilliant and insightful April Hirschman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
April, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
I had a client in her 60’s who was terribly sexually abused as a child. We worked together in the coaching sessions on her learning how to touch her body in a loving way. She said it was the first time she felt pleasure in her body instead of shame.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started as a life coach and then transitioned into being a sex and intimacy coach. My sister Celeste Hirschman co founded the Somatica Institute. I specialize in helping couples move through blocks to intimacy, help solve desire discrepancies, and clear up old resentments that are blocking connection.
For individuals I help them define what intimacy means for them, communicate what they want sexually, and move past shame around any difficulties including orgasm.
I am very proud when clients move away from self doubt and shame about their needs in the realm of intimacy and begin to be confident and proud of themselves.
Have you ever had to pivot?
For many years when I was living in San Francisco I was cobbling together an income from being a massage therapist, a belly dancer, and a tarot reader. I loved my bohemian lifestyle. I had a great deal of investment in my identity as a belly dancer. But I came to a crossroads where I realized to fully dive into it I would need to constantly promote, dance alone instead of in a troupe, and specialize my brand. Even then its a hard industry to make it in and for a lot of it I was communicating nonverbally with many male audience members projecting their idea of sexiness on me. I had no voice. I missed the sisterhood of other eras of my dance where I had more community.
So I decided to become a coach. I started as a life coach and then pivoted to being a sex and relationship coach. This gave me a more solid career where I could share my voice, my vision, and my intelligence in every session and workshop I lead.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The most helpful thing for succeeding my field as a sex and relationship coach has been having two referral companies refer clients to me. Thats it. Its been life changing. It removes so much of the hustle out of being an entrepreneur.
