We were lucky to catch up with April Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.
April, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
My journey into the world of makeup artistry started unexpectedly while I was working at Belk, stocking shelves in the houseware department. Often, during my shifts, I found myself drawn upstairs to the cosmetic department, where I engaged in conversations with beauty reps, expressing my longing to explore makeup artistry.
One fortunate day, an opportunity arose at the Fashion Fair counter, and I eagerly seized it. After a successful interview, I landed the job that would ignite my passion for makeup.
The days following were a blend of excitement and nerves. I immersed myself in learning every aspect of the craft, from color theory to application techniques, all while building rapport with clients.
As months passed, my clientele expanded, but my aspirations soared higher.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Eighteen years ago, I embarked on my journey in the makeup industry, starting out at various cosmetic counters such as Fashion Fair, Estee Lauder, Philosophy, and MAC. However, it was my tenure at the MAC counter that truly propelled my career forward. Venturing into weekend freelancing after this pivotal experience, I dedicated 16 years to honing my craft part-time before taking the bold step to pursue it full-time.
Driven by a deep personal connection, I established my own cosmetics brand, Alel Beauty LLC, paying homage to my beloved grandmother, Lela, who raised me. The name “Alel” is a heartfelt tribute, formed by spelling her name in reverse. Under this label, I offer a diverse range of products, including 20 variants of mink strip eyelashes, lip gloss, and lip liners. Additionally, I’ve introduced my own line of custom-made wigs, meticulously crafted using sewing machines and precise client measurements.
My passion for helping others, particularly those grappling with hair loss due to medical conditions like alopecia or cancer, led me to provide tailored solutions. Notably, I collaborate with clients’ insurance providers to alleviate the financial burden of acquiring wigs. In memory of my late mother, Gwenevere, who succumbed to cancer, I established the GLH Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to offering free human hair wigs to qualifying individuals in need.
Among my achievements, I take immense pride in my wig company, which not only delivers quality products but also offers solace to women undergoing challenging treatments. I am driven by the belief that my endeavors honor my mother’s legacy.
Setting me apart is my unwavering dedication to fostering meaningful connections with my clients. Over the years, many have evolved from customers to cherished friends. I want to convey to prospective clients, followers, and admirers that my services transcend mere makeup applications or wig purchases—they offer an enriching experience, a sanctuary where individuals can authentically express themselves, share laughter, and leave feeling uplifted.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2023, I was honored to receive the prestigious NC Best Makeup Artist of the Year Award. The nomination itself was humbling, but the overwhelming support and votes from the community truly touched me. The recognition came at the esteemed Carolina Fashion Awards, an annual celebration of beauty and style.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new clientele has been word of mouth. Most are referrals
