We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful April Floyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with April below.
April, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
As a business owner managing six enterprises simultaneously, I have never experienced a vacation that wasn’t related to my work. After my cancer diagnosis, my greatest regret was not having a genuine vacation. Now that I am cancer-free, my primary wish is to take a real vacation, entirely free from work commitments. This new chapter in my life allows me to see the glass as half full, adopt a more optimistic outlook, and enables me to pursue experiences that truly reflect living, rather than merely being alive.
April, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My girlfriend recently inquired why I consistently introduce myself by my full name, even among friends. I explained that I view myself as my own brand. This brand encompasses not only my professional endeavors but also my identity.
Throughout my career, I have authored four novels, written scripts, acted in films, and held various behind-the-scenes roles. I have captivated audiences with my voice and touched hearts through dance. Additionally, I have created a complete clothing line and advocated for underserved communities. My brand is April Floyd.
Currently, my husband and I are proud founders of the Legends In Film Festival, alongside six other businesses. When audiences leave feeling entertained, I want them to remember, “Eddie and April Floyd have done it again!” Whether they exit after viewing one of my films, finishing my novel, admiring my designs on the runway, or enjoying our film festival, my greatest pride comes from knowing that I have offered them a memorable experience. I perceive my name as synonymous with who I am: April Floyd.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Navigating life’s challenges can often feel like undergoing a rigorous sifting process. Many wonder, what exactly is the sifting process? Just as cooks use sifters to refine flour, separating the finest from the impurities, every successful business undergoes a similar experience. This journey often involves harsh lessons and reveals the true nature of our closest friends and family.
Much like the sifting process, it requires effort to sift through life’s trials until only the most challenging aspects—represented by rocks—remain. However, the work does not conclude there. Once you identify these hardened pieces, which have been hidden within your flour, you realize they no longer serve a purpose. These stones symbolize those loved ones who do not truly support you. They may blend in, masquerading as love and encouragement, until the sifting process uncovers the genuine nature of love and support by distinguishing the high-quality flour from the impurities.
Now that you have this awareness, it is essential to confront the situation and dispose of these stones, casting them aside where they belong. But the journey doesn’t end here. You may find yourself second-guessing the sifter’s judgment, contemplating the potential usefulness of these rocks in other contexts. The wise course of action is to discard them, ensuring they are removed completely and cannot be retrieved.
Is this the conclusion? Not quite. The sifting process must continue with each new batch of flour brought in for baking. I have experienced the loss of many family members and friends who represented these stones. Although this loss is painful, it is survivable. As rocky flour is discarded, new opportunities arise for growth and connection. I lost a brother but gained many more brothers along the way. With each sifting, I have honed my ability to recognize the stones, making it increasingly easier to eliminate them.
In the end, you will come to appreciate the sifter for the clarity it brings to your life.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My husband serves as my co-founder in all of my ventures. Many people believe that collaborating in business could jeopardize either the company or the marriage. However, our experience has been quite the contrary. I genuinely value our partnership at work, but we established some guidelines to ensure a healthy balance between our professional and personal lives.
