We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful April Doyley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with April below.
April, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I was in the Army for nine years and I have a background in IT. I currently work as a Business Managements Analyst for Army National Guard. I am in the process of going back to college to earn my degree in Dietetics with hopes to become a Registered Dietitian. I became interested in fitness and health when I decided to join the Army. Before joining the Army I was overweight and lost over 40lbs to meet the requirements and that was my first journey into learning about health and fitness.
Shortly after I left the Army, the pandemic happened and gyms started to close. My job went to a remote schedule so I had more time at home. Due to gym closure and times, I worked on turning my basement into a gym so I can have have a place to workout. For the first time, I followed a shred program and I received great results, so much so that when I would go anywhere in workout clothes, people commented on my physique and asked what I do for working out and what sports I play. I realized there was a market for this so I decided to become a personal trainer and I studied and passed the exam. Fast forward, I had clients ask me about nutrition questions. I then looked up possibly becoming a nutrition coach then later decided on Dietitian. I stumbled across my passion later in life but it feels good working toward something I truly enjoy. I have had success with training clients and soldiers and I believe I can translate that success when I become a Dietitian.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Business Management Analyst and a Personal Trainer. I got into the industry because of my passion for the heath care industry. I provide personal training services and what sets me apart is that I train from my home. My basement is a gym. Clients have a more personal experience and it works well with clients who are not comfortable going to the gym. Many people struggle with going to an actual gym and for some the environment is scary and uncomfortable.
One thing I am most proud of the results I receive with clients whether its losing weight and or toning up. One thing I want people to know about my brand is that I am distance runner. I have a completed an ultrathon and I have completed four marathons. I have a goal to run all six world majors. I currently completed Berlin, Chicago, and I have London this year. I encourage my clients create SMART ( specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound) fitness goals when they start a program, because I am results driven and believe they should be the same.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Although I am a personal trainer, my full time job is a Business Management Analyst for the Army and no I would not choose the same profession. When I joined the Army, I was young and had no idea what I wanted to do, so I chose a job that would help me gain me professional experience. While I was moving up, I went through the motions for almost 10 years not knowing whether it was my lifelong career. I was content and afraid of starting over. I am no longer in that head space.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Social media has impacted my philosophy. I didnt know there was this big market and multiple avenues until I went into fitness. While I still struggle with online presence, I learned a lot from fitness influencers and was fortunate enough to meet some of my favorite ones by attending their workout sessions. One of my favorites influencers complemented me and gave me the encouragement I needed.
