We were lucky to catch up with April Buckley- Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
April, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I think the first time I knew that I wanted to pursue my artistic path professionally was when I was in high school. I remember a teacher calling me Wendy Williams because I would have all the information about what was going on in school, and it was so hilarious when reporting it back to her. I knew that I was meant to do something with the media whether it was hosting a music countdown show like Lala from MTV or free from 106 and park or even becoming a news anchor reporter. The dreams were always present, but my action behind it was slow to come. It wasn’t until I decided to I knew that I was meant to do something with media, whether it was hosting a music countdown show like Lala from MTV or free from 106 and park or even becoming a news anchor reporter. The thoughts were always present, but my action behind it was slow to come. It wasn’t until I decided to go into becoming a content creator that I realized all of the possibilities were in my hands. Fast forward to 10 years later, and I decided to start blogging for youtube one of my first vlogging days was going out to get a Yoni steam with some of my friends. If anybody knows what a yoni steam is, you know you have nothing but time to sit on this pot, so we talked with the woman who owns a business, and she asked us all, “what do you guys do?” Because I believed in leading with the life I wanted, not the life I had, I told her that I was a content creator, and she told me she loved my personality and thought that I would be a great fit for a media company that hosted events, interact with celebrities, and help develop up-and-coming media personalities. The rest was history.
April, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is April, a.k.a. April B. “Your Favorite Media Maven,” and I am a media personality, radio host, and Contin creator. Like I said in a previous question, I was transitioning to becoming a YouTuber when I met a wonderful woman by the name of Brittany who thought that I would be a perfect fit as a media personality for a company she had previously worked with. She had tried to get us to connect, but our times never seemed to align. Fast forward a couple of months later, I started following the media group online and saw that they were having open auditions for people. I went in and spoke with the head of Media Girls Network, Jelisa Raquel, and from then on, I was just being plugged into different events. I hosted a couple of events for them, then I could move on to start interviewing artists from DEF jam, rock nation, and more. A couple of months after this, I met a guy who owned the radio station. He saw my content on my Instagram and wanted to get me on his radio station with my own show. I talked it out with Kwa Da 1 Big Deal of DLE radio for a couple of weeks, and then we finally set up a time for me to come in and do a test run. The test run went effortless, and he was pretty much sold on moving forward with me starting my own show. When it came time for a title for my show, I decided to go with what my YouTube was named, which is April‘s Corner__. Creating April‘s Corner__ for me was a pivotal moment because I created it to allow a space for people to come and be themselves and live out their dreams with no judgment. One of the main things I want people to know about me, my brand, and my work is that I’m a living testimony that you really can do whatever you want as long as you put your mind to it and work hard. Prior to moving into my work now, I was working at 9 to 5, which I enjoyed, but when God calls you for your purpose, your hunger for what you know you’re supposed to be doing becomes a lot more than what satisfies you right now. I want people to know that with your purpose, passion, and perseverance, nothing can stop you from walking on the path of your dreams.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think a lesson I’ve had to unlearn to unlearn is that success is the opposite of failure. Success and failure go hand-in-hand because failure allows you to find other ways to become successful. We’ve been programmed to believe that when we fail at doing things, then we are completely pushed out of the game when in fact, failure is a symptom that helps us to realize we have to strive harder, look for other outlets, and push through to find success. I always say that in life, I have W’s for wins, and I have L’s for lessons. Failure gives us lessons, not losses. For example, any time that I have missed out on an opportunity that I thought was going to be the pivotal moment to change my career, I would always think that this pushed me back 10 years on my journey. But in reality, missing out on certain things gave me an opportunity to see that everything happens in due time. Any opportunity that I thought I missed out on has come back to me tenfold in a better opportunity. And when it came back, I was more prepared in my craft, in my work ethic, and in my talent to be able to give what I really needed to give for that opportunity.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think my journey itself is an illustration of resilience. There’s a slim chance in life that people will be able to live out their dreams. There’s an even slimmer chance that people will get paid to do what they love. I’ve been blessed to be in both of those statistics. Resilience is when you fight down Berrios put up to block you from kicking and doors of rooms you know you’re meant to be in. In a world where looks, body types, lack of thought, or intelligence is respected, I’m constantly going against that. I am a plus size, dark skin woman who has an opinion on everything, and I stick beside it every day. Resilience means standing your ground and knowing that you will get paid for being you when the time is right. That’s what the April’ Corner__ journey is all about.
