We were lucky to catch up with April Barber recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi April, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
The idea that I had was to start to begin an advocacy business to help those who are justice involved. Advocacy played a crucial role in my release. I want to be the person that helped me through my journey. I registered the name and have been promoting it ever since. It had grown in recognition, but not as much as I would like. I receive ongoing advice, generate awareness, and funds to help those in need.
April, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a justice involved business owner. It was important to me to provide a service that is much needed to those who do not have a voice. I provide resources to those who are incarcerated as well as those who will reenter into society. I advocate to the humane treatment of the forgotten population. We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was sentenced to life at the age of 15. I was physically locked up while my mind roamed free. I advocated for myself and after 31 and a half years of incarceration I was released. This is the largest example of resilience that speaks for itself. I am an author of four books that showcases my mental fortitude that were all written during my imprisonment.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The initial capital for my business was developed from hard work and dedication. I have worked full-time and then some to provide the money used. I have fund raisers and receive donations from those who believe in me and my mission. I hope to receive grants in the near future to further my endeavors.
