We caught up with the brilliant and insightful April Axé Charmaine a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
April Axé, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Our flagship program, The Embodied Revolution, came to me at the Youth on Fire Leadership Camp with my mentor, Melissa Michaels where I was trained in leading embodied rites of passage programs. I have spent the last 5 years channeling the vessel for this vision which originally came to me in 2018. I have been on a mission to hold spaces of movement and healing that allow truth, safety, and free expression that allow us to say something, feel something, be something and do something to change ourselves and the world with our bodies. The call for The Embodied Revolution cries as humans all across the world keep getting hit with hardships, challenges, obstacles and limited, programmed and colonized thinking. Now, we realize that our embodiment leaders, practitioners, fellow artists, educators and movers need spaces for restoration, remembrance, creative activation, and to practice being in right relationship with self, each other and the planet. We are on a mission to provide embodied healing justice in community through our work that includes the use of SOL VIDA movement methodology, which includes: Afro/Modern/Hip Hop + Conscious Dance, SomaSource, 5 Rhythms, Symbology of the Orixas, healing arts circles, embodied rites of passage, writing, choreopoems, dance affirmations, spirit connection and performance art

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I want people to know that The Embodied Revolution is Calling and it is here! The Embodied Revolution is currently made up of worldwide artistic leadership trainings including: in-person and hybrid immersion workshops, professional development/staff wellness programs and an annual gathering of the global movement collective. We are leading a global dance and wellness movement for social change. We are thrilled to be co-creating intentional containers that center community care to raise the vibration of artivists, healers, leaders, lightworkers, dancers, educators, and creatives.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building relationships across the globe has been key. Establishing networks the SF Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Mexico, Guatemala, Spain, France, and Colombia is one of the most connective activities that is really starting to pay off. We are creating ripples of connection through our relationships with fellow dancers, DJ’s, educators, entrepreneurs, and healers that has allowed us to build our reputation and have a global reach.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn a lot of systemic oppression and effects of colonization to get where I am today. I have done this through movement, ritual, and deep immersions in nature.
