We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aprajita Lal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aprajita below.
Aprajita, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
I have been donating my original paintings for few causes including “SynGap Research Fund” , “Cancer Research and Aid Foundation” , “Green Peace” for last couple of years. I feel happy that my artworks are a means for these organizations to raise money through a silent auction of my artworks during their events annually.
I also volunteer to teach art to special needs kids and adults occasionally during the year. I have also been actively giving art lessons in a senior center in my neighboring township every year.
Art can definitely make a difference in people’s life by bringing in happiness and joy. And hence the motto of my art venture – “Art that brings Happiness”
Aprajita, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
“A Journey of Art and Resilience”
In the fateful March of 2020, as the world grappled with an unprecedented pandemic, I found myself at the threshold of a planned three-month sabbatical. Little did I know that this period of respite would coincide with global turmoil. With the unexpected convergence of home-schooling and remote work for my family, my much-anticipated painting retreat took an unexpected turn.
Undeterred, I embraced the challenge. Distractions became minimal, routine became my ally, and within 75 days, I accomplished my goal of creating a significant number of paintings. As the proud artist, I adorned our living room with this newfound collection, eliciting amazement from my family.
Encouraged by my husband, I embarked on the next chapter of this journey – creating an artist website. Leaning on my years of technology experience, www.aprajita.art was born on July 7, 2020, showcasing my art to the world.
My early connection with art traces back to childhood, guided by my real art teacher – my mom. Winning the first prize in the “All India Camel Color Contest” in the third grade marked a turning point. Art became a lifelong passion, weaving through my academic pursuits in computer applications and my 17-year corporate career.
Art, however, remained a constant, evolving from a personal pursuit to a professional calling. Weekend paintings turned into a diverse collection, eventually finding a home in galleries, and validating my path as a professional artist.
For me, the true reward lies in the ability to “share happiness and connection to nature” through my art. Nature, forgiving and magical, serves as a profound inspiration. My mission is to foster an intersection of art and nature, creating a space that brings beauty, happiness, and a healing connection to our environment.
With the simple saying, “Art that Brings Happiness,” I live by the belief that art has the power to heal, nurture, and elevate our lives. Join me on this journey of art and resilience.
My overarching goal is to be more than an artist; I want to be a positive force, addressing the needs and desires of those who invite my art into their lives. Through the canvas, I seek to solve the challenges of the human experience, one brushstroke at a time.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist after transitioning from a long and fulfilling corporate career is the profound sense of authenticity and purpose that each stroke of the brush brings. In the corporate world, success often came in the form of achievements and milestones, but it was in the pursuit of my passion as an artist that I discovered a different kind of fulfillment.
As an artist, I am no longer confined to the structures and expectations of a corporate setting. Instead, I find reward in the freedom to express myself authentically, to convey emotions, and to create pieces that resonate with the essence of my being. Every artwork becomes a testament to my personal journey, reflecting the courage it took to embrace change and follow my heart.
Moreover, the joy that my art brings to others is immeasurable. Witnessing the positive impact on individuals who connect with my creations adds a layer of fulfillment that surpasses any professional achievement. Being able to share emotions, stories, and moments of happiness through art creates a unique and rewarding bond between myself and those who appreciate my work.
In essence, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to craft a narrative that is true to my soul, to touch hearts, and to contribute a piece of positivity and inspiration to the world. It’s an ongoing journey of self-discovery and connection, making every day as an artist a reward in itself.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Understanding and supporting a creative person involves recognizing the nuances of their artistic journey. First and foremost, appreciate that creativity is a deeply personal and often introspective process. It’s not just about creating tangible pieces; it’s about expressing emotions, ideas, and a unique perspective.
To support a creative person effectively:
Acknowledge the Unpredictability:
Creative inspiration doesn’t always adhere to a schedule. Be patient with the ebb and flow of their creative process. Understand that periods of intense focus may be followed by times of reflection and incubation.
Value Individuality:
Creative individuals thrive on expressing their uniqueness. Encourage and celebrate their distinct voice and style. Recognize that creative journeys are diverse, and what works for one may not work for another.
Create a Supportive Environment:
Foster a space that encourages creativity. This might involve setting up a dedicated workspace, providing necessary tools and materials, or simply offering quiet time when needed.
Ask Open-ended Questions:
Engage in conversations about their art. Ask open-ended questions that allow them to share insights about their creative process, inspirations, and the emotions behind their work.
Attend Art Events:
Attend art shows, exhibitions, or gallery openings with them. This not only shows support but also helps you understand their artistic community and the context in which their work is appreciated.
Invest in Their Passion:
Support their artistic journey by investing in quality materials, workshops, or courses that enhance their skills. This demonstrates your commitment to their growth and passion.
Provide Constructive Feedback:
Be honest and constructive in your feedback. Understand that constructive criticism is a valuable part of the creative process. Focus on specific aspects you appreciate and suggest ideas for improvement.
Celebrate Milestones:
Whether big or small, celebrate their artistic achievements and milestones. This could be finishing a project, receiving recognition, or even achieving personal creative goals.
Remember, supporting a creative person involves embracing the fluidity and depth of their artistic endeavors. Your understanding and encouragement contribute significantly to their ability to express, create, and share their unique vision with the world.
