We recently connected with Apollo The Salty Doggie and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Apollo, thanks for joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
A lot of people ask us how we decided to buy a sailboat. We never owned a boat before and if you can imagine Apollo’s mother is originally from the Czech Republic, so the first time she saw the ocean was until her 20s when she moved to Miami where she met Apollo future dad. He’s the one who bought Apollo in 2019 just before covid pandemic, so when Apollo was little puppy, the dog parks were closed and there was nowhere to go. So one day we went to the Venetian Island because even the beach was closed so this was the only place we could go to escape the apt for a little a get some fresh air and that’s where Apollo learned how to swim. We were fascinated by how much he loved the water that we started going everyday to the same spot and one of the days we saw a small boat and the people aboard looked that they were having a great time in the trying times that covid was for all of us. They were jumping into the water and enjoying life like nothing was going in the world. That was probably the first moment when we started to think about buying a boat would be a good idea. When we got home, we started searching for more information on the Internet. On the beginning, we thought about a small boat that we would use for weekends, we looked at about 3 small boats and talk it over and came to the conclusion that a small boat wasn’t for us. We came across videos of people who lived on a boats for the whole year and traveled all over the world. So we started looking for a bigger boat for us and we looked at around 4 bigger boats ranging from 37 ft to 44 ft.
So the search was on for days we looked and looked we saw this beautiful 42ft Morgan sailboat that fell in love with but the only problem we had was that it was under contract, we kept looking but nothing came to what we felt with the Morgan. One we decided to call the number again and they said that the other buyer fell through so we jump on it and bought it that same week. Obviously she needed and still needs some work to get her ready for long voyages but little by little and with the support of followers we are fixing her little by little.
Apollo was about 7 months when we moved to the sailboat and from the beginning he loved it! There is so many fun things he can do on the boat so he is very active when he is on board, we call him the lifeguard of the bay because he tells Jetski’s and dinghy’s to slow down and at night time he lets everyone know when there’s dolphins around and other boats that are getting to close. As well He gets to swim almost everyday and go to the Island to have some fun time with us.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We stared Apollo social media since he was 2 months old. It alway had a success but after moving to the sailboat his social media grow even more. He had about 17K followers on Instagram when we were buying the boat, now he has about 108k on Instagram and 425k on TikTok. I have never realized how much power social media has, we been able to get a sponsor ship for Apollo food and that was when another idea was born. We decided to sail the Caribbean and help the stray dogs with food. We are also starting YouTube channel where You can see more about this project. Now we are just waiting to prepare our boat and be able to safety sail the ocean. For now we been practicing and learning how to sail around Florida. How I already say non of us had previous experience with the boat we needed to learn how to sail from the very begging. Actually there were many more to learn before that, I remember I use to didn’t know how to tie the dinghy correctly.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are many thing we wish we know before buying a sailboat. How I already said the boat had some thing need to be fixed. In the first year we focused of fixing the most important stuff like bathroom, refrigirator (I remember buying ice everyday to keep our stuff cool), non of the A/C were running, there were a many leaks (for some of them we are looking till today) and I could keep going. There is still lot to fix but we are getting to the point we will be able to pull our anchor and leave.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
We are sharing all that on our media, its focus more on Apollo prospective. You can see him jumping in the morning from the dinghy, swim around, going fishing with our neibhroos, barking at dolphins, manatees and other water creatures and watching the most beautiful sunset. Anyway sometimes Im surprisee how much hate people leaves in the comments. They will be saying Apollo should live in the apartment, blaming us we don’t deserve the dog and other. I would usually not even respond, Im pretty sure his live is better in the boat where he has a lot more freedom that on the apartment walking few blocks everyday.
