We recently connected with Aphrosoul Lukumi and have shared our conversation below.
Aphrosoul, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I am and have been a full time working artist for 25 plus years. Majority of my work is as a DJ spinning an alternative, eclectic blend of soul, jazz, funk, rare grooves, deep house music, techno, world music, global polyrhythms of the African Diaspora. I am also a Community Radio Broadcaster with a weekly radio broadcast, MOJÙGBÁ RADIO on WPFW 89.3FM and a bi-monthly broadcast SOLSDANCE on EATON RADIO. I do what I love and love what I do. I have a motto I live by, seek and find what you love and create a way to make a living from it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission in this plain of existence is expansions of the mind, healing of the spirit, uplifting of the soul, through the frequency modulations of music. Establishing or reestablishing connection and communication through music. Every being animate and inanimate is of energy. You, myself, the plants, the air, the water, the sky, the stones, emitting frequencies. Tapping into the frequencies, hence healing and uplifting the vibration.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
People, places and, things being uplifted. Reaching out and acknowledging that they were going through something and being healed and released and uplifted through the music that I play, bringing them to be better place. I have spun a DJ set during one of my sacred dance parties and had people reach out to me expressing how the arrived with heaviness to the party, dance and released, leaving the party healed and uplifted. That was and is the goal the mission of what I do as artist.
