We recently connected with Apagnawen Annankra and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Apagnawen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It started in 2007 when my father passed away(a week before I turned 15 ). We wanted to do a photo slideshow at his wake keeping event . I checked on google and was introduced to windows movie maker which i used to create the slide. Later that year i was enrolled in high school and that’s when I made the decision to pursue it professionally.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a Self-taught photographer & filmmaker who loves nothing more than living life through my camera lens, capturing every essence of beauty from my subjects and being able to tell their unique story.
Im the proud founder and creative director of Apag Studios. I first showed an interest in photography after my father sadly passed away and was asked to prepare a slideshow for his wake. Although im the main creative in the family my passion may have stemmed from my father’s fondness for artistic material as well as photography.
Like many other creative masterminds i did not go to school to learn my craft. Instead, i would lock myself away after high school in my bedroom and immerse myself in a fountain of photography knowledge from books or on the internet. I see everyone and everything as an artistic instrument. “How we were created is artistic, we are all unique and deserve a unique look and an original story to tell”.
We have worked on amazing projects and has collaborated with top officials, brands and celebrities and known to be one of Ghana’s top renowned photographers & Filmmakers currently and im not someone who is giving up anytime soon.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Witnessing your own growth as an artist is one of the most rewarding parts of being an artist. Is a learning process that continues for your entire career and life.
You get inspired almost everyday in your life to create something .
You get to create art for yourself and watch as other people take notice and respond to it.
I get to to live a life that is truly authentic to who i am.
We get to enjoy a great deal of freedom. You are your own manager, and you alone determine what you will create.
Also , as an artist, you’re constantly strengthening communication skills.
Putting yourself out isn’t always easy. It takes courage and a belief in yourself. It takes confidence.Luckily, the more we do the things that make us uncomfortable, the better we get and the more confident we get.
Health wise , my brain health, Emotional Processing & Stress Relief has been great as well as having improved focus

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Changing the Global Narrative…
Starting out in photography, My mission has always been to reshape how Africa is portrayed globally. Too often, the continent is viewed through a narrow lens. As a photographer, I focus on capturing the beauty, resilience, and creativity of African people, highlighting the diversity of experiences and perspectives across the continent.
Promoting African Innovation and Modernity
My creative journey is fueled by the need to showcase the modernity and innovation present in African societies. focus on capturing the forward-thinking aspects of our cities, entrepreneurs, and artists, which are often overshadowed by outdated stereotypes.
My mission is to bridge African and Western cultures through my craft. Living in the UK has given me the opportunity to explore the fusion of both worlds, and use my work to create a dialogue between my African heritage and the multicultural environment I now inhabit.
