We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aolani Coban. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aolani below.
Alright, Aolani thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
If I could go back in time, I would consider starting my creative career sooner. I embarked on my creative journey in my early twenties but looking back, I can see how starting earlier could have given me more time to refine my skills and build my network. More than just starting earlier I wish I’d had more confidence in my knowledge, belief in myself, and discipline to have stayed consistent throughout the years.
When I began, I was fresh out of college, and while I had a passion for creativity, my focus was on dance, theater, and performance. Had I started my path as a passionate creative earlier, I might have had more time to experiment and develop my unique voice. Starting later allowed me to bring more wisdom and network to my creative work, which enriched my approach, perspective, and audience. But I know that what truly did me a disservice was restarting my journey every so often.
I sometimes think very black and white leaving little room or space for flexibility. There have been so many times when I would start a project, not see the immediate result or lose that initial fire, and then just stop. When I would decide months later to come back to it, it’s as if I had to reintroduce myself to my audience every time. It’s a mindset I’m still working on.
Reflecting on my journey, starting when I did was beneficial in many ways; it allowed me to mature and gain a clearer vision of what I wanted to achieve. However, I sometimes wonder how an earlier start or consistency would have accelerated my growth or opened different opportunities.
Aolani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Absolutely, I’d be happy to introduce myself. My name is Aolani, and I’m a dancer, performer, and social media creative. I’ve been performing since the age of seven, which laid a strong foundation for my creative expression. In 2021, I took a significant step by channeling my passion for writing into a broader creative venture, and that’s when I fully embraced my role as a social media creative.
My brand has evolved from writing insightful blogs to creating engaging content across various platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, and Spotify. I specialize in producing entertaining and informative videos to craft compelling content that resonates with diverse audiences.
What sets me apart is my unique blend of performance experience and social media expertise. This combination allows me to bring a fresh perspective to content creation, making it both impactful and engaging. I take pride in the growth of my brand across multiple platforms and the positive response and engagement from my audience.
For potential clients, followers, or fans, I want them to know that I’m deeply committed to a purpose that not only entertains but also inspires and connects with people on a personal level. My overall goal is to simply make the most out of living life by fostering a genuine connection with people through creative expression.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I’m excited to connect and explore how we can collaborate to create something truly extraordinary!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Oh, all the time! I find myself constantly needing to pivot and reevaluate my life, goals, and course. I typically reassess at least once every quarter, sometimes spending weeks or even months reflecting and adjusting my approach.
One of the most intriguing challenges I face is the strange dichotomy between living life in the flesh and living life online. As a social media creative, it’s often a balancing act. For instance, there are moments when I’m fully engaged in an activity, and midway through, I think, “Actually, I need to record this.” Conversely, when I’m recording, I sometimes wonder, “There are so many people in this space—will they mind being recorded?”
It’s a fickle world out there. You want to capture authentic moments, but you also don’t want to make people uncomfortable by intruding on their everyday lives with a camera. This balance can be overwhelming, especially when the shot you hoped for doesn’t turn out as planned. There are times when I have to make the decision, “You know what, I’m not going to record this today. Today, I’m just going to be fully engaged in the moment.”
Navigating this balance has been a significant part of my journey. It’s taught me the importance of being present and respecting others’ space while also striving to capture and share meaningful content. Each pivot has helped me refine my approach, ensuring that my work remains genuine and respectful while adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of social media
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there is definitely a particular goal driving my creative journey. While the idea of fame might sound simplistic, for me, it’s more about the broader impact and recognition that comes with it. My mission is to build a strong and influential presence in the creative world, where my work resonates widely and makes a meaningful difference.
I aspire to create content and performances that captivate and inspire people, reaching a large audience and fostering a deep connection with them. The ultimate goal is to gain recognition not just for personal acclaim but to amplify my voice and message in a way that contributes to larger conversations and influences positive change.
In essence, my drive comes from a desire to make a significant mark in my field, leveraging that visibility to share my passion and vision with the world. It’s about creating something impactful that people remember and engage with, and using that platform to continue growing, evolving, and connecting with others.
