We recently connected with Antuonette Patterson and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Antuonette thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?

As a military spouse and new mother, finances were limited. My initial goal was to lift the burden from my husband, and share in the financial responsibilities of our growing family. I’ve always had a passion for hair, and creative expression so I found any way I could, to nurture that passion. I started as a kitchen stylist serving the local community providing services from braids and twists, to extensions, silk press and more. As a result of the overwhelming support, I experienced many busy days, nights and weekends. My health began to decline which forced me to limit and eventually stop servicing the community in that way. Creating Wigs was my way to continue doing what I loved and being of service to those that needed me.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

My name is Antuonette and my love for hair started at a very young age. Growing up without the internet, or social media my talent grew from trial and error. I enjoyed trying different styles in my hair, as early as elementary school, Having 2 sisters to practice on gave me the discipline and consistency I needed to grow and improve my techniques.

From middle, high school and into adulthood hair has always been a big part of my life. As a kitchen stylist I used my gifts and talents to make women see their beauty on the outside that they felt, or wanted to feel on the inside.

When I started to create wigs I wanted to continue doing what I loved while working to improve my health. In that time a number of women who have experienced hair loss reached out to me for help, and my life changed for the better.

Im most proud of my ability to touch lives, enhance inner beauty, and boost the self confidence of my customers thousands of miles away, through my wigs.

I work diligently for my customers with the goal of eliminating the discomfort and embarrassment of revealing their hair loss to the public.

I Provide natural looking and secure custom wigs to not only encourage high self esteem, but also to assist each customer with gaining their power back against hair loss. My wigs can be conveniently applied in the comfort and privacy of one’s home with 4 easy steps, and can be worn for years with proper maintenance,

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

I’ve always been a hard worker, “busy bee” some would call it. Starting a business finally gave me a more focused place for that part of me. However I feel its so necessary to unlearn the pattern of “people pleasing” and “overworking” to truly be successful.

Make time for self care, and be sure to get rest. I spent the better part of my life neglecting my self care, to drive the mission of either a company I worked for, or my own business and it almost cost me my life! I would say it’s most important to have balance, but it’s not always clear what that means.

Carve time out for YOU.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect for me has been the feedback from my customers who have truly experienced a shift in their self esteem. I love to make others feel happy and important, loved, and seen, so knowing I have done so through my wigs, has been the most amazing feeling!

Another, just as important rewarding aspect, has been watching my evolution. My work improved over time, and seeing myself transform a blank canvas into a beautiful masterpiece made all the long nights, tears and the overall journey worthwhile!
