We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Antonio Valdovinos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Antonio , thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?

2020 gave me the push I needed to take a risk on myself and start this business I had been longing to do. Even as a teenager I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone else, but I had children at a young age and was supporting our family while my partner stayed home with the kids and worked part time. I would mention my idea to people and a lot would laugh, I’d like to say it didn’t hurt or discourage me but I am human. Despite the lack of support from outsiders my partner believed in me and all of my crazy ideas, I had an exponential amount of support from my employer at the time and decided to take the risk and quit my job to become my own boss. It wasn’t easy, a lot of time away from my home and family, low on cash and energy but I stuck to it and things grew quickly. I had an amazing first year in business and now in year 2 i am feeling those early on growing pains but this is the time you’ve got to dig deep and hang on and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I’ve been in the freight and logistics industry on and off since about 2007. I really became involved in 2013 learning the ins and outs of the business and thought to myself I can do this. I was able to make invest in myself of my real estate background, which is essentially how I got started. RDS is a 3rd party logistics company. What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

Being a loyal and hardworking employee, that definitely played a roll in building a reputation for myself, because at the end of the day it’s who you know. I always give 110% and people notice that.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I’d have to say I’m currently experiencing this, I was in such a high after my first year in business which is usually the opposite for people but with inflation my business took a turn and things got really slow. I had to let go of some of my drivers because I couldn’t afford to keep them, I was cutting costs here and there even paying myself less and I thought this is it, I’m going to fail. I definitely had a moment of defeat where I was ready to throw in the towel but as the old saying goes “when the going gets tough the tough get going” and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Why would you quit on yourself and what you believe in and what you’ve struggled for? You wouldn’t right? It may be tough right now but I am going to continue to push past these barriers and make it out on top.
