We recently connected with Antonio Pomares and have shared our conversation below.
Hi, I’m Antonio Pomares an Afro-Latinx, indie geek culture broadcaster. Having been a co-creator of “Off the Shelf” and co-host/executive producer/director of “Strange in the Membrane” my love of geek culture has only grown. Currently I co-host “Fandom Initiative”, with co-creator Michael Williams. I also host a solo show called “The Hungry Bleek Show” where I interview, do comic reviews,, speak on self self care/mental health, spotlight Kickstarters, and reccomends restaurants. I’ve hosted segment called ”The Lit Pick” for The Xion Network Variety Show on Instagram, plus been a contributor on the Blerd trivia card game “Blerd Domination”. I chose “The Hungry Bleek” moniker to represent my love of food and being a Black geek. Comic books have been my first love. In fact, comics helped me to learn how to read. An aspiring “geek polymath”, I have an open mind to all of the geek culture spectrum from comics to horror movies to stand up comedy to pro-wrestling. In my spare time I enjoys walks, gaming, binge watches, laughing with friends, making tea, and finding new restaurants to visit. I’m an avid T-shirt and coffee mug collector.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I can think of 2 things. The first is that I have a stammer. I stutter. I’ve had it since my parents divorce. It’s gotten better with practice and being more self aware but it’s still an obstacle at times. I acknowledge my stutter on air because I’m transparent and want others with the same issue to feel confident enough to speak out loud and tell their stories.
About a 2 years ago, my Mother had a stroke. While she continues to recover, I’m her caregiver. Being a care is a LOT on one person. I honestly thought I’d have to give up on my pursuits. After some time away, I made a commitment to myself and then to my audience to continue the show. In that time I have kept that commitment, created another panel/news show for SUBSUME Studios, and starting doing comic book reviews for Black Sci-Fi.
Aside from buying their work, society can listen to creatives. Listen to their stories and the process of getting their works from ideas to becoming reality. Go to their signings because you support the creatives AND the stores holding the events. We need those comic shops to stay open. People can also interact with them on social media platforms. Sharing posts online can really bring needed attention projects. If you bought something from them… POST ABOUT IT. People share things all the time but won’t share about projects they like, said items they bought, or just a friend’s new work. It’s takes less that 5 minutes and can help so much… especially when it comes to Black women, LGBTQIA+, PoC, and non gender conforming creatives.
