We recently connected with Antonio Heath Jr and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Antonio , thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative path as a career in 9th grade. I always loved to dance as a kid, but I didn’t become aware of my passion until 2009. When I was coming up in Michigan not many people around my neighborhood were into dancing the way I was. YouTube was by bestfriend. It was where I found my love for dance first.

Antonio , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a movement Artist, and streetwear brand owner from Detroit, MI. The Arts have always been where my heart was. The streetwear brand is called Flexing is Art, I started this in 2017 with my now fiance who is also an Artist. The motive of our brand is to unapologetically Flex your Art. Your art is whatever you do in life that you’re passionate about.
Within the dance community I have competed, judged and performed in multiple states across the USA. I’m entering my 16th year overall and my 11th year as a part of a community. I’m also a teacher/mentor of the dance style called Krump. A dance that originated in Los Angeles, CA.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
A huge step forward for artists to be better supported would be for those who book artists to understand how much hard work goes into learning and building your career. Be more open to understanding an artist’s prices in most cases are based on our resumes, which we should be able to provide proof of to validate what we charge. Exposure is not always enough. We have to eat as well.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the idea that talent alone was enough. Work ethic and consistency are 2 major components to growing as an artist or creative. Even on the days when you arent posting or sharing your work, you should be getting better or healthier. And never neglect rest days. Recharging is how we keep going.
