We were lucky to catch up with Antonette Russell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Antonette thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me is recommend my boutique to other people. I love when people recommend me because you get the most of your business from word of mouth. So if people have never heard of you that is how you gain a customer and a friend.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Antonette. I am 31 years old and I own the boutique named Beauty’s Desire Boutique. I have been a small business owner since 2020. I have always wanted to be in the clothing industry because when I was little I was bullied because of my clothes and because I was on the bigger side. Growing up I always noticed that there was never really any cute clothes for bigger people and I literally hated that. So now as a boutique owner I specialize in Plus size clothing as well as self defense items. You don’t really see anyone having plus size clothing. Which makes it so much better for me because I am plus size and offer plus size clothing. People want to buy from people that understand the problems they are having.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Currently I am funding my business from my own pockets. Sometimes it is very difficult to do. The reason being is if your funds are low there won’t be any items. But there looks to be some grants coming around for small businesses.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
One thing I will say when it comes to this business. If you are on social media keep posting. Even if you feel like no one is watching. There is always someone watching.
