We recently connected with Antoinette Hudson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Antoinette, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It all started when I found out my cousin was pregnant with her first child which was very exciting. Being that I am such a “Mama Bear” I jumped right in with emotional and informational support. My cousin had lost both of her parents which was a really trying time for her during her pregnancy and I just wanted to be there for her making sure she was ok and she had everything she needed to be ready for her baby. We would talk everyday about how she was feeling, doctors appointments, morning sickness, cravings, baby’s
first kicks, labor prepping and birth planning. Although being a Doula had not crossed my mind it was like God was preparing me to be a Doula and I had no idea what was in store for me. Being that I myself had experienced having a Doula with my last pregnancy; I would inform my cousin on different breathing techniques, birth ball exercises and how to write a birth plan. It wasn’t until my cousin was in labor; I was coaching her through it over the phone making sure she stayed calm while breathing through the contractions. Still not thinking of being a doula I had called my close friend who was my doula letting her know everything that was going on while my cousin was laboring; she was so excited for me while coaching me as I was coaching my cousin through labor; I remembered her saying, “is the Lord telling me you’re going to be my partner in this doula business. I told her; “no you are the doula not me then she said; “well im going to need you to pray about it because you are doing an amazing job helping your cousin” so I prayed about it. Once my cousin’s water broke our other cousin drove her to the hospital; when she arrived at the hospital she was 10cm dilated and ready to push all of a sudden a sense of Joy I had never felt before came over me at that very moment I felt the Lord was confirming my calling to be a doula. My cousin had delivered a beautiful baby boy so I called my friend/ doula sis to let her know the baby was born; I was so filled with joy and crying at that very moment we both knew I was entering a new journey of becoming a doula. That’s how I got the idea of Sunkissed Doula which is the name of my business.

Antoinette, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Antoinette Hudson I am Christian Doula owner of Sukissed Doula. What is a Christian Doula? A Christian Doula is a non-medical companion who can support pregnant women physically, emotionally and spiritually from a biblical based perspective throughout childbirth. During labor they can reassure and encourage you and help you with changing positions, breathing, biblical scriptures, prayer, massage and relaxation. Also we help advocate for pregnant women providing supportive information so they know that they have a voice and can make healthy decisions for themselves and their baby. We also provide prenatal visits. During those visits we help prepare mommy for labor, learning different comfort measures; like birth ball exercises and breathing techniques. Services are customized and tailored to each family according to their perspective. I am most proud of being able to help empower expecting moms and families during this a amazing time in life. At Sunkissed Doula we believe when you surrender your Life to God he will always be with you. We can do all things through Christ which Strengthens Us.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by providing lots of informational content on how to prepare for labor, birth planning, comfortable measures during labor, and breastfeeding. Canva is one of my go to platforms I use to create promotional content on social media. The advice I would give to anyone starting to build their social media presence is to always be present and keep your social media active. Always promoting your business is key to having great social media pressence.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first started my Journey of being a Doula the first 3 clients were virtual, so I was not physically present during the birth. My 4th client which was just recent I was able to be there in person which was an amazing experience. Mom last two pregnancies were high risk being that she had pre-eclampsia which is a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure. So my focus was to make sure mom was as relaxed as possible, keeping her hydrated, coaching her with comfort measures. I stayed by her side in the hospital during the labor and delivery making sure that we all stuck to her birth plan as much as possible. I’m happy to say she did not experience pre-eclampsia this pregnancy and she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl with no complications. Having a doula is a much needed service. Studies show birth outcomes of mothers who have a doula are less likely to have low birth weight babies, experience birth complications, and have preterm or cesarean births.
