We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Antoine Johnson aka DJ Fresh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

DJ Fresh, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.

The Key to learning is being a great listener and that’s how it all started for me. I’ve been a student and in love with music all my life. I’ve learned the essence of playing and selecting music from many greats that came before me, in which I grew up listening too and still listen to now. However the technical side of DJ’ing and marketing was all self taught and I’m still learning everyday.

With the knowledge I know now, I believe having a mentor would of helped speed up my learning process. Someone who is or has already been where I want to go now, would be ideal in enhancing my growth throughout my career.

There are many skills that are essential within my work, however the three that stand out to me the most is the ability to effectively read your crowd, versatility and being different.
Reading the crowd effectively allows you to understand the audience you are entertaining and how you can fulfill there needs. Being versatile can enhance your performance as you will be able to please any audience you may have, regardless of the group or age. I believe the key to standing out is to be different and try new things. Have fun within your work and your audience will enjoy you even more.

Throughout my journey thus far I’ve faced many obstacles, however none of this has effected my ability to learn more. I believe obstacles allow you to grow, which in itself is a learning experience.

I am Antoine Johnson better known as DJ Fresh. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY to parents hailing from Saint Catherine Jamaica and Georgetown Guyana. I moved to Florida at the age of 17 to attend college at Bethune Cookman University, where I received my bachelor’s of science in psychology.

Shortly after my arrival in Florida, I truly believed that the city I lived in at the time was missing an authentic caribbean musical experience. This is where my journey as an entertainer began, as I felt the need to enhance and bring life from my culture to our community.

If you are seeking the ultimate music experience, fused great vibes and energy, DJ Fresh checks all those boxes. I provide entertainment services at concerts, corporate events, radio, weddings, clubs, schools and more. Throughout my career my talent has provided me with the opportunity to share stages and work with international stars including Skinny Fabulous, Charly Black, Mr Killa, Tara Lynne, Bad Boy Timz, and Dev.

As an entertainer I assure my clients a time full of amazing music, great energy and positive vibes. The mission throughout my work is to assure that the client forgets about any problems they may be facing and to live in the moment full of joy. My ability to play multiple genres of music and entertain any group or age without restrictions is a key factor in what makes me different.

Having the ability to create my own lane and continue to learn and grow is what makes me proud. DJ Fresh is a brand that provides amazing energy and an refreshing atmosphere. With having a unique modern style, viewers and listeners will always feel intrigued to see what’s next after a performance!

: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

Definitely! My mission is to continue to create a unique experience in entertainment and DJing that will leave listeners and viewers intrigued and forget about their problems.

My goal is to have this positive effect on many people internationally.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to create a positive mood for hundreds and thousands by entertaining and doing what you love.
