We recently connected with Anthrone Oats and have shared our conversation below.
Anthrone , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Royal Sowings, the name derived from my last name “Oats” and what God’s word says… “You reap what you sow”. So the name means SOWING ROYAL OATS!!!
Anthrone , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a 43 year old Ocala native (Ocala, Florida). This isn’t my 1st rodeo in entrepreneurship but it’s my best ride thus far. I’ve had dealings in multiple business ventures but none as successful as my present company. Once released from prison in 2012 I was blessed and cursed with tunnel vision, and that vision was healthy income that turned into wealth.
Royal Sowings, Inc started out as a debris removal and equipment rental idea but has since grown into lawn and landscaping along with tractor/heavy equipment work. I’ve been able to provide my oldest kids and some family members job opportunities. I scaled the company to a 6 figure business in the 3rd year. I can’t take all the credit because I’ve had an amazing team as well as an outstanding mentor to help guide me on the way.
The one thing about the services provided by my company is they are necessities in the community. With the fast pace growing of Central Florida because of COVID, our small town has been overwhelmed with property developing thus creating more need for lawn and landscaping. We love bringing quality services to our clients and helping to make properties look fantastic amidst curb appeal.
With the success from Royal Sowings Inc we will now begin venturing out into real estate and bringing tiny homes, off grid, and short term rentals to the area. This being away to provide affordable and adventurous living for the area. Allowing tourists to experience rural living, beautiful springs, and the amazing horse capital.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the street life and incorporate it into the corporate world. Before prison I only knew poverty, selling drugs, and living for those who didn’t even care that I was breathing. I learned that you can only give when you only have it to lose and expect nothing back but that becomes draining and it will leave you empty and shallow. I unlearn what I thought money was, and learned that money is only a tool to fix the real problems and it’s only to be used, not cared about!!!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I came home with 3100.00 that I saved up in the prison work release program. I took that money along with a 2k credit card loan and started a Car Audio Business. That business was based off my childhood passion but it was more of a hindrance because I was providing products and a service for the wrong reason because I didn’t understand money. I still own the company but it’s more so a side gig and done when I have down time.
