SubscribeWe caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anthony Stengel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
So in my experience, Ive found what I think to be a pretty simple formula for success and its has to do with your mindset towards failure. I think many people feel that failure is a bad thing, and it tends to be commonly looked down on or people try to avoid it. I really believe that embracing failure is the key to growing and progressing toward success. The problem really is when people fail, and then quit rather than using that failure as a learning opportunity and a chance to do it differently next time. Continually iterating on an idea or concept and never giving up after a failure and learning from the failure and applying that knowledge to your next attempt or iteration is the key. Embrace failure :)

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I worked in the healthcare industry for over a decade, but really got burnt out on the industry as a whole and being on call. I was able to transition out of that job into owning my own video production company which I have been doing now full time since 2020. My company Stengel Media focuses on corporate, commercial, and documentary work and we have been striving to be story focused in each respective category. I have had the pleasure of being awarded 2 regional Emmys for short character docs I’ve created, with an opportunity of a 3rd Emmy nomination this year. Fingers crossed!
I think what sets my company apart is our focus on telling character driven stories and focusing on empowering and platforming people and communities that typically aren’t prominently featured in Wyoming or western stories. Women, indigenous peoples, and the queer community are people we’ve tried to highlight, and we are fortunate to have that opportunity.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Since I had a career in healthcare, I was able to fund my video production company using the money I was able to earn from doing video as a side hustle for a few years to continually put back into the business and purchase the equipment and education I needed to go full time in video production. It took about 2 years of very hard and focused work to achieve that, my healthcare job included being on call so basically I had to make alot of sacrifices to ultimately achieve that goal. I had more all nighters than I’d ever like to do again during 2019 but I knew that if I worked hard it would pay off.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me being a creative with a camera has been amazing. I think the thing that I didn’t expect was the amount of access a camera and being creative offered me. A camera is a vehicle for me to explore the world and get to know people. It’s brought me all over the world and has allowed me to view everything through a different perspective. I’ve been able to share stories and see how they have impacted not only the viewer but also the person on camera. I have learned how important creative fulfillment is to me personally and I feel so lucky to be living the life I am currently living.
