We recently connected with Cuddy and have shared our conversation below.
Cuddy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The very first dollar! I wish I would have saved it like Mr.krabs or Everybody Hates Chris’s dad – Julius. My first gig was a production of my own. After Emceeing a fashion show, and a showcase for musicians, I decided to keep the moment going and chase my music passion and I started DJing. I saved up my paychecks from work, my refund check from school, income taxes, anything I can get my hands on! I bought my first DJ set up which was a NuMark Mixdeck CDJ. That summer, I went to a local resturant/bar called The Waiting Room out in Rahway, NJ. I pitched the idea for my first event, Green Light Thursdays, and they allowed me to have a residency for the entire summer. The first night was a hit and i made my first earnings as a creative! After I paid out my security and split the rest of the proceedings with my partner, the rest of the money was actually spent that night partying with my firends. It didnt go to far but i did again week after week! And I didnt spend it all in one place haha.
Cuddy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well going back to the first question, I got the opportunity to host a fashion show. I was the master of ceremonies for the evening and I introduced models, different designers and interacted with the audience. I loved every moment of it. I did so well that someone who attened the show asked me to host an artist showcase for them soon after. From there, IT WAS ON! Later on that year, because I was still on a high from doing these events, I purchased my first DJ setup. I always burned CDs throughout high school, now it was time to take it to another level. I started hosting and DJing my own events, many of my colleges functions, college radio and being in school is how I got my first internship at a professional radio station.
The creative services I provide are audio production, Djing, I host events,
I produce shows. I’ve produced shows for the world-famous DJ Clue, Ebro In The Morning, DJ SussOne in the radio realm. I also produced a show for SnapChat called The Dreamers House, which I also hosted some episodes.
I’m a comedian as well. I’ve curated my own comedy shows and have done a number of stand-up shows, I’ve had comedic roles in music videos, and I do online content such as skits and parodies.
One of my most proudest moments and my prized possession is a plaque I received from Epic records for my contributions on Futures song ‘Mask Off.’ The record went 4 times platinum and I was part of the journey of getting it played in the clubs, lounges, and on radio.
On the topic of radio, I am also most proud of recently being given the opportunity to have my own show on Sunday nights on iHeartRadio. I’m on Rappin Lounge Radio at 7pm – Smoove Sundays.
What sets me apart from others is the fact that I do it all! There aren’t many if any of these occupations that do the same ones I do! There aren’t many Comedians that can ALSO DJ. There few EmCees that can produce a radio show; I do it all! And that’s what makes me different from anyone else.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The story is still going, which mean I still have to show resilience in this game. The most earth shaking situation for me was when I got fired from my first job. I felt like it was all over, I felt like i had no more friends in the industry and no one would want to even talk to me. I knew I couldn’t stay down though. I looked for inspiration up and down and eventually found it. Even some of the greats have been fired or lost a job many different ways. I had to pick my head up, poke my chest out and keep grinding. Less than a year later I go an even better situation. I then learned you havve to be resiliant and can’t quit on your dreams once the first dip in the roller coaster comes. THE RIDE ISN’T OVER YET!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time I had to pivot my business and career was not too long when I transitioned myself from the emcee lane back into my DJ bag. I was on a role hosting for years but the demand for me kind of dwindled. I couldn’t let myself go out like that. I had to dig deep and found inspiration and at the depth of it all I went back to my first love, the music! So when things eased up in the hosting lane, I had to rebrand myself as a DJ. It actually worked out better because there is more of a demand for my services. just when I thought things were dark, there was bright light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t give up on yourself!
