We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anthony Nguyen Mindy Le. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anthony Nguyen below.
Hi Anthony Nguyen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Anthony & Mindy are both Vietnamese-Americans that were brought up in traditional Vietnamese households that instilled the values of hard work, discipline, and helping others throughout their childhood. It was standard practice in our households to not only serve guests, but to also help them with any and all tasks they may needed assistance with. These core values weren’t just suggestions, but were deemed requirements in order to succeed and achieve the “American Dream”. Both Anthony and Mindy’s set of parents have been small business owners at one point in their lives — encompassing 4 individual business operations, with Mindy’s parents still being active business owners.
Being that we were raised in an environment where both of our parents were business owners, it provided us with a look into the type of dedication that was needed to not just survive, but to thrive. We had prime role models of what it meant to work tirelessly, be meticulous in the details, and establishing relationships built on genuine intentions. They led by example – through their actions and not just their words. They were a testament to the old adage “Hard work pays off”.
Luckily our parents still provide us with immense knowledge, wisdom, and support to this day. We have been able to implement their advice and guidance into our practice, and have instilled those same values that we were raised on into Refresh Physical Therapy’s core values. We are proud to be Vietnamese-American small business owners in the healthcare field and continue to revert back to our traditional cultural values as pillars of our business model.
Anthony Nguyen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We both knew that we wanted to be physical therapists while playing sports in high school. We wanted an occupation that could still be connected to the athletic population, but also provide medical care to heal and help others. At Refresh Physical Therapy we specialize in 1-on-1 hands-on physical therapy treatment techniques including — dry needling, cupping, and movement retraining.
We believe there is a huge void in our medical system, specifically within orthopedic musculoskeletal care. There is a lack of individualized treatment at all levels, with medical providers using cookie-cutter treatments and very little focused attention on an individual’s specific needs and goals. With our treatment model and high level facility, we are able to spend the entire treatment session focused on a single patient and their personal goals. Within our gym we can work on improving on a specific activity that is important to them whether its cutting their grass, return to running, or their deadlift form.
The only way to guarantee that our patients would get the quality care that we were accustomed to providing, would be to start our own practice. But not only that — to open a physical therapy practice that didn’t accept the traditional health insurance, but rather have a fee-for-service, cash-based model. Using the fee-for-service model, we would be able to guarantee the highest quality of 1-on-1 care for our patients and not be restricted with our treatments due to insurance guidelines. Our treatment model not only provides superior quality of care and patient experience, but it can actually save patients money and time due to faster results in fewer visits. We believe that our current healthcare system is broken and that more people will continue to see the benefit in our model that provides personalized care with transparent costs.
We are always excited to see our patients heal from injury and regain their physical capabilities. But we are most proud of the change in mood, happiness, and confidence that our patients gain after improving physically. Smiles return to their face. They stand up taller. They’re willing to try new activities and participate in social events that they would normally turn down due to pain. That’s the true example of “Feeling Refreshed.”
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Anthony and Mindy started as staff physical therapist colleagues at a large hospital system in New Orleans, LA working together for 6 years. We both completed PT school around the same timeframe and accepted our first jobs at that clinic. We gravitated towards each other because we were both Vietnamese-American, but also we were growing our clinical and professional experience on the same developmental timeline. We were able to observe first-hand each other’s treatment skills, work ethic, and passion for helping our patients. Having 6+ years of experience together collaborating on treatment plans for complex patients, discussing new scientific evidence in our field, and witnessing each other’s soft skills were invaluable to our partnership today.
As our careers progressed and endured the COVID pandemic, we both realized how flawed the medical system and health insurance model had become. We knew that the only way to guarantee premium quality of care that we were accustomed to providing to our patients would be to start our own practice with a fee-for-service model.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
We are a strong believer in providing superior quality of care and letting our results speak for themselves. We believe that we are filling a void within the healthcare system that many people are now seeking, which is the 1-on-1 treatment experience with personalized plans specific to each individual with them in mind.
By sticking to our values, word of mouth has been really effective for us. Once patients experience our treatment and quickly achieve their goal then they are ecstatic to spread the word to family, friends, and even share their experiences on social media. Very frequently patients are getting referred from a trusted friend that experienced our quality care firsthand and produced real results.
Community has been a big part of how we started to get our name out. New Orleans is a small, big city. Since both of us grew up in this area, we had big communities amongst our friends, families, and recreational sports groups who would support and trusted us to provide PT services to them. Through those groups, we have been able to network and make connections in so many ways. As our reputation of providing high quality care continues to grow, our community expands organically.
We also put an emphasis on maintaining a social media presence. Our accounts are aimed to be educational, demonstrate examples of our treatments, and display topics that are relatable to the general public.
Showing how much we care and are invested in your patients has really made growing a lot easier. Our patients really appreciate the time we spend with them and something as small as checking in on them means a lot to them.
