We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anthony McDuffie, Jr.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anthony below.
Anthony, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My journey as an author, motivational speaker, and spoken word artist has been deeply intertwined with the mission of Grit Grind and Glory, LLC. While the company officially began four years ago with a mission to motivate and inspire youth, the seeds were planted long before.
My path to this mission began during my time in prison, where I served 15 years for an attempted murder charge. Upon my release, I was driven by a profound sense of purpose to become a better person, a better man, and a positive force in my community. Growing up in some of Los Angeles’ most dangerous neighborhoods, I understood firsthand the urgent need for positive messages and preventative measures to steer youth away from the criminal justice system.
Through Grit Grind and Glory, LLC, I speak and conduct workshops tailored to empower young people to strive for their best selves. Additionally, my journey as a spoken word artist allows me to share poetry written during my time in prison, offering a unique perspective on resilience and personal growth.
Currently, I am collaborating with producers to adapt my memoir, “GRIT GRIND AND GLORY,” into a TV series, furthering the reach of our mission to inspire and empower youth.
This mission is not just a professional endeavor; it is deeply personal and rooted in my own journey of redemption and transformation.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My story began in some of Los Angeles’ most challenging neighborhoods, where I faced the harsh realities of poverty, violence, and systemic inequality. After the sudden passing of my father when I was eight years old, I became rebellious and turned to the streets, finding family and belonging in a gang. However, my life took a drastic turn when I was incarcerated for an attempted murder charge.
During my 15 years in prison, I underwent a profound transformation. Writing became my outlet, my therapy, and ultimately, my salvation. I discovered the power of words to heal, inspire, and connect with others. It was during this time that I began crafting the narrative of my debut memoir, “GRIT GRIND AND GLORY,” which chronicles my journey from adversity to triumph.
Upon my release, I was determined to use my experiences to make a positive impact on the lives of others, particularly youth facing similar challenges. Thus, Grit Grind and Glory, LLC was born. Through this platform, I offer motivational speaking engagements, workshops, and mentorship programs tailored to empower young people to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
As a spoken word artist, I blend poetry with personal storytelling to convey messages of resilience, hope, and empowerment. My performances are not just entertainment; they are a reflection of my lived experiences and a testament to the transformative power of self-expression.
What sets me apart is my authenticity and my commitment to uplifting others. I don’t just talk about overcoming adversity; I’ve lived it. I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made and the lives I’ve touched through my work. Whether it’s inspiring a room full of students or connecting with listeners through my poetry, knowing that I’ve made a difference fuels my passion and purpose.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my work is more than just words on a page or a stage. It’s a journey of resilience, redemption, and relentless determination to make a positive impact on the world.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A defining moment showcasing my resilience unfolded during my incarceration. At 17, I received a 25-year sentence for attempted murder. Deeply entrenched in Los Angeles’ gang culture, I had no regard for my life, let alone anyone else’s, and now, there was this long stretch of years in front of me. It felt like a death sentence at the time.
Looking back, being sent to prison was part of my life’s journey to not only redeem myself but grow as a man. And as harsh and demeaning as prison was, it also put a hard stop on my criminal activities and transformed my life – and probably saved it. In my debut memoir, “GRIT GRIND AND GLORY,” I talk about all the setbacks and pivotal moments that tested my resolve.
We often hear the word ‘rehabilitation’ tossed around in the criminal justice system, but rehabilitation is not an external process; it’s very internal. While inside, I made a conscious decision to not let circumstances define me, but that decision didn’t come right away. It was a very, very long process. I grappled with my past, addressing deep-seated trauma and reevaluating my mindset. There were several pivotal moments in prison that threatened to derail my process but I knew if I was to survive it, I was going to have to change my thinking and how I approached things.
Each poem in my latest book, “MY LIFE IN POETRY,” bears witness to this introspective journey, penned during my time behind bars. Through writing and self-reflection, I navigated the complexities of my inner world, emerging with renewed resilience and purpose.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is anchored by a clear mission: to serve as a beacon of inspiration for the next generation and empower them with the hard-earned wisdom I’ve gained. Having overcome daunting challenges, I feel a profound obligation to share my narrative and offer guidance to those dealing with similar issues.
Growing up in the unforgiving environment of the ‘hood, I witnessed firsthand its unkindness and brutality. In the midst of chaos, today’s youth are tasked with scaling seemingly insurmountable obstacles to attain success. Yet, amidst this turmoil, I firmly believe that anything is achievable. My mission is to instill in the next generation a steadfast belief in their potential and a passionate pursuit of greatness.
As I engage with youth nationwide, I witness their unwavering determination—their resolute commitment to rise above circumstances, even in the absence of mentors or positive role models. In these moments, I offer them hope and convey a simple truth: they need not seek permission to chase their dreams, only the resilience to persevere. Despite formidable odds, they possess the power to leave an indelible mark on the world.
