Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anthony Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Anthony thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I was actually let go from a previous job and had decided I wanted to become my own boss. It was either go look for a new job working for someone else, making someone else’s money for them, or chase my own dream. Luckily, I had a background in photo and video already. It had been a hobby and side income for a few years and getting let go was the push I needed to go full-time. Weddings are good money and I was already filming weddings but decided to do more of them, and through word of mouth I had increased other side projects for video and photo as well. Project after project my name had increased throughout the area and that’s all it took to keep the income fluent. Doing good quality work and being unique is what I based myself on. The work had to speak for itself, and it did. My work caught the eyes of many people and allowed me to travel the world and work with some very famous and influential people. I am grateful!
To speed up the process I would have marketed myself better. I still need to market myself better. Some people are really good at talking themselves up and marketing themselves, and in return they’ll receive the jobs that I feel I would better handle. Taking the humble approach and expecting word of mouth and Facebook posts to get you the bigger jobs isn’t the way to go.

Anthony, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the biz about 10 years ago when I bought a GoPro and started filming shows in Detroit and other random things. Things grew from there and I never looked back. Now I provide professional services like commercials, ads, interviews, social media content, wedding videos, photography, drone media, etc. I like to think I solve my clients problems through creative content and setting them apart from the rest of the competition. You’d have to see my work to see what sets me apart from the others. My work is all visual and auditory, so you’ll just have to judge for yourself!
Something I’m most proud of is being different and always taking the time to put out a quality product. If you work with me, there’s a good chance you’ll be satisfied at the end of the day and also proud to share the work we create together.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The main thing that helped build my reputation was doing good work. I wouldn’t be successful if my work was trash. It’s easier to get noticed when people are excited to share your work.
The other thing is having good energy. Have a positive attitude. You will get opportunities just from being humble and being friendly.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is that it is my job to create. Not many people can say they get to create for a living. Part of it is going to new locations, new jobs, meeting new people, creating different content. Its often new scenarios and I think that keeps things interesting.
